All books have their own strengths and weaknesses. It also depends a lot on the person and his needs/likes. There's a list of recommended usmle review books at the back of First Aid. Choose from the A's and A+'s there and then go to Amazon.com, see the inside of the book, and read the reviews.
These are the books I've seen throughout the years (mainly for my comprehensive exams in my last year of med school and local board exams):
USMLE Road Map Gross Anatomy - I used this book for my local boards and I like it very much. But it's heavy compared to High Yield. That's why I just don't recommend it for the usmle esp for those who have used Kaplan already. It's more on the clinical side which is good for the usmle. However, you need to supplement this with another book (atlas) to orient yourself with the anatomical structures. There are also end-of-chapter questions which I find useful.
Netter's Atlas (Pocket Book) - I'm just mentioning this bec this is the one I used to supplement usmle Road Map during my first reading of Road Map. After my first read, I didn't feel the need to go back to this book. There's a brief description/caption for the color plates which I find very useful. There are no captions on the Netter Big Atlas so I was glad to find them in the pocket book Netter.
High Yield Gross Anatomy - Very easy read. Good supplement to Kaplan books for the usmle.
Anatomy Recall - Straight-forward anatomy Q&A. There's an available accompanying audio version. I bought this mainly for "recall" and for the audio. However, I haven't been able to use it. Maybe bec. I found better books. It's currently collecting dust in my shelf.
Case Files Gross Anatomy - My roommate bought this bec. we thought we would remember anatomy better if it's case-oriented. However, I have seen better Case Files Series books like in Surgery. In CF Gross Anatomy, I felt that the book wasn't very well written or didn't live up to its surgery counterpart -- I forgot exactly why I didn't stick with it. My roommate and I reviewed with usmle Road Map instead.
Snell's Clinical Anatomy Review Book - This book is very popular in my country bec. urban legend has it that the examiners take questions from this book. The urban legend turned out to be a... legend. Anyway, this is heavy on the gross anatomical structures and less on the clinical part. This maybe a good summary to your basic sciences in Med school but it doesn't help that much for the usmle.
Kaplan Anatomy - Why not just stick with this book. Problem-solved! Happy-2 This is a time-tested book. It contains histology, gross anatomy, embryo, and neuroanatomy. There are also a bit about CT scans, etc. Pretty good deal for me.
