In this thread we vote for the Best Gross Anatomy Review Book for the USMLE step 1.
Unlike the best comprehensive review books for USMLE Step 1, you can choose only one option here as it's unlikely you relied on more than one book in your preparation.
If you know of other books that are useful for Gross Anatomy preparation for the USMLE step 1 please post your reply and we'll add it to the poll options.

Big textbooks are not listed

I think you forgot the most important of Anatomy texts, Keith L. Moore Gross anatomy, its longer than most, but truly an AMAAAAZING textbook, I don't need to review any anatomy after i got done with that and made my own notes.....its soooo clinically oriented!
Dear Dr_Kal_El,
The list of books in this poll include USMLE-oriented books in a short high yield format. We intentionally left big textbooks such as Moore's, Gray's, and Netter's.
Please let us know if you think these textbooks should be included in this poll.

Netter's Clinical Anatomy

Ok. I have read almost half of Netter's Clinical Anatomy, but I must say that I love those pictures. Clear pictures and explanations. The most important structures written in bold font. I was surprised how good were the embryology pictures of this title. I found BRS embryology (a bit long) very helpful, but pictures weren't so good.

I haven't been this eager to read anatomy ever.

Hi There

Hi Guys.
I'm doing right now gross anatomy.
I'm watching David Seiden videos - i like it very much. than i just read through lecture note book. But than I read High Yield Gross anatomy by Ronald Dudek. this guy is a contributor of KLN gross anatomy.
if Kaplan anatomy is not enough for you i advise you to do both books parallel.
at first I watch videos - than lecture notes - than High Yield book.
if you will study approximately 6-7 hours a day you'll be ready in 10 days.
:D
wish you luck

Hi all

Hi all

As I was looking at your posts, most of us believe that kaplan is comprehensive and complete but studying anatomy from it, is a little boring,

I have started probing between different anatomy books, and I had a look at recall anatomy, HY anatomy and BRS anatomy

I found HY anatomy superior in compare with other books, regarding to its more photos and illustrates

As we know the materials in all USMLE books are highly similar, so I think we shouldn't worry about it, and we could opt the one that makes us satisfied and is more effective in learning concepts.

Thanks for your time, and I really appreciate any comments about other books.

after i skim some chapters from Rapid Review i found it is more much better than HY ...

HY although it contains a very good clinical correlation with "well chosen" x-ray, CT & MRI photos, it is too dense and more directed to surgrey than to basic anatomy.... moreover the gross anatomy is highly detailed and boring ! but it is not a mistake to do the clinical section alone.... in addition to another book which is Rapid Review...

Rapid Review is a great combination between Clinical Embryo and Anatomy without excessive details .... great clinical correlations with good x-ray, CT & some MRI images.... and the most important thing that you don't need to go & search for additional Atlas becase many "High-Yeild" colored images are included from Netter's Atlas & another Atlases....

So i decided for Anatomy & Embrgo to do RR + some clinical correlations from HY....

hoping best for all...

Anatomy aint that HY on the STEP 1 from what many people say,and many times its tied into a Pathology question.

First Aid should be good enough with UWORLD. Kaplan Anatomy is good as well.

BRS Anatomy is like 400 pages and in my opinion absolutely absurd.
If you REALLY want a "board prep anatomy guide" go with HY Anatomy, it has around 150 pages.
What kind of school starts anatomy in 2nd year!!??

All books have their own strengths and weaknesses. It also depends a lot on the person and his needs/likes. There's a list of recommended usmle review books at the back of First Aid. Choose from the A's and A+'s there and then go to Amazon.com, see the inside of the book, and read the reviews.

These are the books I've seen throughout the years (mainly for my comprehensive exams in my last year of med school and local board exams):

USMLE Road Map Gross Anatomy - I used this book for my local boards and I like it very much. But it's heavy compared to High Yield. That's why I just don't recommend it for the usmle esp for those who have used Kaplan already. It's more on the clinical side which is good for the usmle. However, you need to supplement this with another book (atlas) to orient yourself with the anatomical structures. There are also end-of-chapter questions which I find useful.

Netter's Atlas (Pocket Book) - I'm just mentioning this bec this is the one I used to supplement usmle Road Map during my first reading of Road Map. After my first read, I didn't feel the need to go back to this book. There's a brief description/caption for the color plates which I find very useful. There are no captions on the Netter Big Atlas so I was glad to find them in the pocket book Netter.

High Yield Gross Anatomy - Very easy read. Good supplement to Kaplan books for the usmle.

Anatomy Recall - Straight-forward anatomy Q&A. There's an available accompanying audio version. I bought this mainly for "recall" and for the audio. However, I haven't been able to use it. Maybe bec. I found better books. It's currently collecting dust in my shelf.

Case Files Gross Anatomy - My roommate bought this bec. we thought we would remember anatomy better if it's case-oriented. However, I have seen better Case Files Series books like in Surgery. In CF Gross Anatomy, I felt that the book wasn't very well written or didn't live up to its surgery counterpart -- I forgot exactly why I didn't stick with it. My roommate and I reviewed with usmle Road Map instead.

Snell's Clinical Anatomy Review Book - This book is very popular in my country bec. urban legend has it that the examiners take questions from this book. The urban legend turned out to be a... legend. Anyway, this is heavy on the gross anatomical structures and less on the clinical part. This maybe a good summary to your basic sciences in Med school but it doesn't help that much for the usmle.

Kaplan Anatomy - Why not just stick with this book. Problem-solved! Happy-2 This is a time-tested book. It contains histology, gross anatomy, embryo, and neuroanatomy. There are also a bit about CT scans, etc. Pretty good deal for me. :)

med school anatomy is different from step 1 anatomy
my med school studied every little detail of anatomy, it was tedious memorization

but now prepping for the step, i see i dont need atleast 30-40% of that knowledge because the steps are more conceptual.

study hard in school and get your grades, dont worry about anatomy for the step. you'll come to see whats required for the step is different than whats required for your school.

Which high yield anatomy edition?

Hello,
I would like to know which edition out of all 4 High Yield Gross Anatomy you think will prepare you the best? I've read somewhere that the 3/4th editions contain a lot of low yield info. Are 1st/2nd enough to do well on USMLE? Thanks :)

Histology?

I just got through the Histology portion of Kaplan Anatomy. Didn't score so well on the Histo UWorld test. Should I be supplementing this with another book?
