A 42-year-old women comes to the doctor's office, aiming to find out a way to reduce the wrinkles on her face. She was previously a super model. Replying to the patient's request, the doctor recommends injection of botulinum toxin. Which of the following best explain the mechanism of the toxin?

A. Prevents motor neuron secretory vesicle fuse with neuronal membrane
B. Blocks nicotinic aceytlcholine receptors
C. Inhibits Ca2++ release from SR
D. Inhibits choline uptake into motor neurons

A

* :)Hemicholinium is the drug that blocks the reuptake of choline.

  • The botulism neurotoxin is one of the most potent, lethal substances known.
  • Botulism is a disease caused by this neurotoxin
  • The neurotoxin is produced by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum.
  • The neurotoxin paralyzes muscles by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine.

The answer is A

Botulinum toxin is a very potent exotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. The toxin functions to inhibit Ach release from neural terminals via interfering with the vesicle docking and emptying(which is the same meaning with preventing motor neuron secretory vesicle fuse with neuronal membrane).

Botulinum toxin has no function in choline uptake inhibition. Hemicholinium is responsible for that. :)

Is anybody here having idea of how the toxin helps reduce wrinkles?
