Idea! Physician Assistant after ECFMG deadlock!

I am considering going through a physician assistant program to troubleshoot my medical gap, 15 yrs, and to refresh my knowledge and gain experience that would ultimately help me when I sit for USLME exams in the future.

I am 43 yrs old, and live in the US, but have been away from medicine the last 15 years. I have so many hurdles, in addition to the medical gap. ECFMG rejected my application because they did not accept the letter sent by my medical school that addressed the name discrepancy between my medical diploma and ECFMG application. ECFMG cited the signature of the vice dean as the reason of rejection, saying he is not the official authorized by ECFMG. The dean who is authorized by ECFMG is dead. And no replacement has been chosen for him. I have asked ECFMG to reconsider but have not heard back from them. My curse is that my school is located in one of the most dysfunctional countries in the world. It could take another year or two to get this problem solved.

I am thinking that I study to be an American physician assistant and after few years of experience I would sit for USMLE. What do you think? I appreciate you take the time to advise me.

I am sorry to hear your story and I really wish you solve the ECFMG deadlock soon.

As far as for the PA idea, I think it's a brilliant idea in your case. Not only it will brush you up on your clinical skills and get you back into the clinical environment but it will also get you LoRs and connections that can prove really valuable later on when you start your USMLE/residency journey.

Wishing you all the luck.
