Question Overriding Step 1 Application or Extend Eligibility Period!

Hello everyone,

Please let me know that I want to change my eligibility time period (want to take in Jan - march 2012)...yet I just submitted fees for step 1 & printed all forms..yet didn't send 186 & all others forms to ECFMG (via my medical school)..so should I override it??
What will happen if i override & change eligibility period?

Regarding over-riding, i don't think that is an option. And even if it's possible, it would be a strange thing to do when u can extend your eligibility period by 3 months(from sep-nov to dec-feb) for a smaller fee.

This is what the ECFMG bulletin of information says:

"Eligibility Period Extension
If you are unable to take Step 1/Step 2 CK during the three-month eligibility period assigned to you, you may request a one-time extension. You may extend your eligibility period only through the next, contiguous
eligibility period (the next eligibility period that does not overlap with your original eligibility period).
EXAMPLE: An applicant’s original eligibility period is April-May-June 2011. The eligibility period may be extended only through July-August-September 2011.
You may request an extension on-line using IWA, available on the ECFMG website. If you take the exam during your original eligibility period or if you do not take the exam, you will not receive a refund or credit of the eligibility period extension fee.
You may request an extension of your eligibility period only once for each exam registration. You may request an extension of your eligibility period only after your eligibility period has begun. The processing of your request must be completed by the published deadline or your request will be rejected. For specific information on deadlines, refer to IWA."

So, u should send your forms now. And then in september or later, u can extend your eligibility period.

see i called to ecfmg & asked about my current situation..ecfmg representative told me if u want change ur eligibility period via override option...but some where in ecfmg book i read it that u can't extend eligibility period until your 186 form received & accepted by ecfmg..so yet i just post my documents today to my school...but i m confused is suppose i override it & extend my eligibility period (when ecfmg receive my 186) then wat ll happen ...means again they will issue me new 186 form?? or again i signed it by notary public service & medical school ??

Once your Form 186 is accepted by ECFMG, it is valid for 5 years and u won't have to submit it again.

As for confirming your eligibility period, u can do that by signing in through OASIS on the ECFMG website, but i think it won't show up until the processing of your Form 186 and step 1 application is complete. Or u can check by calling ECFMG again.

The best thing to do now is to wait until the processing of your Form 186 and step 1 application is completed. It should not take more than 3 weeks normally. Just make sure that your medical school officials don't take too long to mail the forms to ECFMG. Once this is done, you'll still have sufficient time to extend your eligibility period.
