Cool When will the Nov-Jan slot open?

Hi everyone. I'm trying to get the slot Nov 2011 to Jan 2012, but it hasn't opened yet. I wrote to ECFMG regarding this and they said that the said slot will open only after the Bulletin of Information for 2012 has been published. They said that it would open in Sept but did not specify a particular date. I just want to get this procedure over with so that I can concentrate fully on my prep. Does anyone know when I should expect this slot to be open? Thanks.

Hey, I remember from last year, that the bulletin was not out till more like the end of September, slots opened probably in October-November, because, I couldn't actually do anything, they only had periods ending in December.

The ECFMG website says it will be open 'around' mid-Sept. Right now they only have the slots ending in Dec. If in case they open it only on late Sept or early Oct, will around 1 month of time be enough to process the documents? I already have the clerkships at hand, just need to complete the online application and fill in the bank draft and send it.. don't know if it's enough time for Nov to Jan slot? Any idea? Thanks.

it depends on many factors. First, do you have 186 on file? If yes, then you only need to pay and go ahead take your exam. If not, then it depends if your school participates in that web portal. If not, you better ask people from your school how long it takes to process the documents and get 186 accepted.

Second, even if you choose the period and your school delays the paper work, then you will be automatically assigned the next period.

P.S. if those periods will appear only in November, you will have to submit before the 25th day of the month or something like that to get that period. Check ecfmg website for more info.

@tigriki :

Thanks for your patience. When I asked my college for the required documents for Step 1, they gave me two documents:

1. One certifying that I have graduated from med school. ( I think this is the form 186, isn't it?)

2. The Clerkships certificate.

I have both of these in hand. So, if the slot opens for Nov - Jan, I now have to fill out the online IWA form first, then fill the bank draft and fill out one other form (don't know which?) and then mail all of these to ECFMG, isn't it? Am I missing anything?

Yes, I am aware that if I'm taking the Nov - Jan slot, I need to get the docs by 25th of Nov. Since I have all these documents at hand, do you reckon I can manage with the remaining processes within Oct and early Nov (considering the slot opens mid-late Sept)?

Sorry if this is too obvious to you. Haven't done these things ever before in my life. Thanks and good luck to you.

Hey, what I can suggest is READ ECFMG bulletin. There you will find all you need, it is a bad way to get the information about applying from the forums.
Exam application consists of 2 parts: online one that you fill out using IWA and after you pay the fee for exam you will get your 186 form that you will need to send to your med school. What I don't know is what types of 186 the system will offer you to choose from based on the information you provide in the online application. Again, I don't know if your school participates in EMSWP. If it does, then it will be different for you. But you will only know it if you 1) ask some of your fellow students, or 2) after you pay the exam fee.

OK, suppose, you need to send 186 to your school, then you will learn from bulletin what documents you have to enclose. After you do it, you will need to wait until your 186 is accepted and only then you will get you scheduling permit and will be able to get a test date at prometric. I cannot tell you how long it takes, it will be better to ask someone from the same country/med school.

As to some of your quiestion, I have no idea why you need clerkship certificate. Honestly, they don't care at that point. You probably meant credentials? All you need is: diploma, translation if needed, forms 186, 187, 344, 345, picture. ECFMG will check your credentials itself by communicating with you school.

you don't get to send anything to ECFMG, your med school does. If you send a package, they will not accept it. Again, it is in their bulletin.

hope that helped.

@ tigriki :

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my silly questions.

You are right. I should read the bulletin thoroughly first. I have it downloaded but I think I've just been too lazy to go through it. I will do that. Also, like you advised, I'll talk to my seniors who are doing their residency in the US and also contact my college.

Thanks again for all your help. You've been very kind. Hope you get through all your steps and get into the best residency program there is. Best of luck!
