Help Applying for the USMLE number & the eligibility period after it

Hey,

First off, hats off to all the people here. You guys give loads of help and ease the process of this entire nightmare.

I am now in the last year of Medicine, here in Romania. I plan to take Step 1 in October/november 2012. For now, I am thinking of at least getting the USMLE ID number. I looked around the ECFMG site, but it was so confusing. Hence, if someone can tell me the process of getting a USMLE ID number so as to apply for a test date period. And can it be done solely online, or I have to send some papers by mail (I ain't sending for ECFMG certificate after all) Also, I won't have the degree till September 2012.

Another important thing I wanna ask: is there a time limit once I get such an ID in which I have to clear the Steps? I plan to take Step1 at the end of 2012, Step2 CK/CS both in mid 2013. I just don't want to get locked up in a time-limit.

So I can at least get registered, and send my medical school transcripts and get them verified now, without selecting any eligibility period for any exam? (I mean only the APPLICATION FOR ECFMG CERTIFICATION)

I wanna start early because I know my med school is lazy, and I want to do everything while I am still here. Once I leave, they may cause problems. Therefore, I don't want to select an eligibility period yet(i.e select an exam) but I wanna just apply for the ID number and get my credentials verified. Is this all possible, without selecting an exam and an eligibility period?

Thanks

You cannot start the process without paying for the exam and choosing eligibility period.
