Registration ECFMG application; Clerkships; Item 24

Hi everyone,

I'm really confused about clerkship on the online application (question 24). I answered yes and entered "urology" as the specialty, because I thought it meant that the clerkship is one's medical specialty, the professional direction after the residency program. (I worked in the department of urology as a surgeon for 4 years after residency program.) However, after reading another thread on ECFMG forum on this topic, I realize that my understanding was wrong, but it is too late because I already submitted this online application a couple of days ago. I have no idea how to fix this problem. Additionally, anyone could tell me what is difference between the clerkship & internship? Are they the same? I had a six-month internship at the end of my medical program, and I'm not sure if that qualifies as a clerkship. I will appreciate it if anyone could give me helpful advice. Thank you.

Clerkships is a general term that usually refers to in-house med school training of "MEDICAL STUDENTS" before they graduate.

Internship usually refers to a year of clinical rotation after finishing the clinical years of med school. In USA, the first year of residency is called "internship", in other countries, the internship year might be the last year of medical school, i.e., Graduation Diploma is granted after the internship year.

Sabio,

Thank you so much for your quick response. Please tell me how to fix my problem if I already entered "Urology"-specialty as the clerkship on the online application (question 21) & submitted it to ECFMG? I really appreciate it any helpful advices that you could give me.

Sabio,

I'm sorry that I'm still confusion about clerkship. The question about the clerkship that I have done inside (in-house job) or outside in my medical school during my last year before graduation? Thanks for your help.

I don't think there's going to be a big issue. Just give them a call and tell them that you had an error in your online application and they'll reset it and ask you to apply again.

Yes, if the rotation was during your medical school curriculum then it can be called core rotation or clerkship, anything else is not considered clerkship. This is at least as understood here in the US, it might be different in other countries.
