Form Question/Item Number 5; Have you ever submitted an application to the NBME?

A couple of my friends had doubts about question number 5 while applying to USMLE Step 1 or USMLE Step 2 CK or USMLE Step 2 CS using ECFMG's IWA Website.

That question is asking whether we had previously applied to any USMLE exam through NBME and here's a screenshot

Question/Item Number 5; Have you ever submitted an application to the NBME?-nbme-application.jpg

Regardless of whether you did apply to another step before or not. You have to answer NO to this question if you are an IMG.

This is simply asking you ever had used the NBME website to register for an exam earlier. Obviously all of IMGs did not use the NBME website and that question should be answered NO.

Yes, because you did not apply to NBME, you applied to ECFMG.

I asked and here is the answer:

"September 2, 2011

Dear Doctor,

Please be advised that item number 5 in the USMLE® application refers to an identification number that would have been issued to an American or Canadian medical school student by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME®) through which organization these students would be registered for the USMLE examinations. If this situation does not refer to you, you should answer "No."

Sincerely,

Now im about to fill the online application for step 2 CK, what should i do now? Thanx in advance to anybody who can help!

What if, if I have said yes to that option which was meant to be no???
can anything be done about it now because I just filled my CS application after taking step 1 and I thought it was 'yes' to that question!!!

Default Yes, same here...

What if I've answered "yes"... what is going to happen? Do I still have to call them? How is this going to affect me?

I made the same mistake. I answered YES to item 5 and put my ECFMG number in the space provided, but nothing unusual happened and my application went through and I got registered.

After going through this post, I have emailed them to correct my records. They will reply in 15 business days time. Lets see what they say.

Hello guys! So the reply came back in about 20 days. this is what it says
"
Dear Doctor,

Please be advised that entering your USMLE®/ECFMG® in item 5 of the application will not cause a discrepancy with your application. Please note however that
item number 5 in the USMLE® application refers to an identification number that would have been issued to an American or Canadian medical school student by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME®) through which organization these students would be registered for the USMLE examinations. If this situation does not refer to you, you should answer "No" in the future.

Sincerely,
Info@ecfmg.org
NES "

So even if we as IMGs enter it as YES by mistake we can change it the next time when we apply for another step. Its only for AMGs.

The fastest way to know about this is to call them and they will tell you what to do. It would take only 2 mins

Default urgent help needed

Hi there.

I'm an IMG and a graduate, currently preparing for step 1. I have some questions as i'm new to this application process and its all very confusing to me. I have completed the online ecfmg certification and now i'm starting the application for usmle step 1. I have seen several threads but I'm still confused about following.

1. If i get my form 186 signed and stamped by college official, will i have to mail it or college office will do it?

2. What if i get it signed and stamped by college and mail it myself but write college office's return address on the envelope? will it get accepted? because i've read that if college official signs form 186 then college office should be sending your application in sealed envelope and not the applicant.

3. Do i need to get college official seal/stamp on envelope as well?

4. Do i need to attach form 344 and 187? because the thread only states that form 186 and 2 copies of form 345 are to be sent only? forms 344 and 187 are discontinued as per ecfmg guidelines.

5. What other documents should i attach in addition to my medical degree (2 copies)? i mean transcript, english language certificate and medical student performance evaluation (MSPE)? do i send these too?

6. Last question is a bit silly but i have to ask it to be on the safe side. Should the photographs be against white or blue background? And ideally what dimensions should they be?

It'd be a big help if they're answered.
