Question A change from Graduate to Student!

Hey guys,

I have this problem, I graduated 2010, my country had a revolution and things got missed up, till 2010 things got better, so I directly applied for step 2 ck and got a valid form with the ECFMG as a graduate.

Now that I moved to another country, a neighbor country of my homeland, I'm told that I have to do a compulsory internship year

Well, I'm pleased to do so coz i'll get a chance to do electives, however the problem is with the ECFMG, how come I apply for electives (which requires a student status) while I'm already registered as a graduate in the ECFMG records?

What to do please help?

You don't have to apply for electives via the ECFMG.
Explain to the school u are applying to what the ur problem is if you get accepted.

You need to answer these questions before we can help you:
  1. Are your medical school credentials verified by the ECFMG?
  2. Do you have final medical school Diploma and transcript from your home country?
  3. What do you mean that you are graduate in ECFMG records, do you mean Form 186 and online application or there are other stuff that you have done?

Your answers are conflicting. You said that you only did Form 186 and applied for the CK but you also said that your credentials are verified.
Form 186 and credentials verification are two separate processes. But anyway, since you have already met the graduation requirements in your country and you have final diploma and transcript, then that's it, you are good to go with the ECFMG. Just pass the steps and verify your credentials and you will be ECFMG certified.

Your internship year in the other country is not needed (by the ECFMG), you can just tell them that this is a form of postgraduate work/training that you have done.

Sabio,
the answers for ur questions are:

1) do u mean verification via the emswp? coz there's been only one email from ecfmg, which my school replied to and as a result i got both - " at the very same day - : a valid form186 + ck permit,,,,am i done? is this "credentials verification"?
2) yes
3) a valid 186 form + a valid application for step 2ck that's all.( as a graduate).

Log in to your OASIS account and on the left side panel click on "Medical Education Credentials and Standard ECFMG Certificate"

Tell me what you see there.

my status is: medical creidentials received and verification is pending.

form 327A has been sent for verification.

So I guess it's been already sent and my home- country school hasn't replied yet. Well, I'm screwed then

is there any chance that i still can apply for electives as i'm considered a student in this new country i'm moving to?? or i'm done?

all i wanted was being able to apply for electives as it increases one's chance in getting a residency .

Your application for internship or electives in the new country has nothing to do with the ECFMG (unless that country is USA!).

Your new country clinical clerkships, internship, electives, ..etc had nothing to do with your ECFMG registration.

Your OASIS status mentions that they have received the credentials from your med school, they just take time (sometimes up to two months) before they verify it.

Once you pass Step 1, Step 2 CK, Step 2 CS, and your credentials verified, you will be ECFMG certified and you can then start residency in USA, regardless of whether you do or you don't do that internship in that new country.

dear Sabio thx so much for ur enlightening reply, however, let me be clearer and i hope u understand me this time, I was intending to make use of this new status (me being a student again) to aply for US electives,,,back when i was a student, i didn't know about how much important doing US electives is in getting a medical residency .( i got to know that US clinical experience is very crucial to have in one's cv before applying for a residency).

plz correct me if i'm wrong, can i be smart and make up for the chance wasted when i was an undergraduate,,,, can i apply for US electives with my new status as a (student ) now or not?

plz tell me if it's too late

No. You cannot apply for electives in USA.
You are a graduate in the eyes of the ECFMG and the eyes of Universities in USA.
