Clock Step 1 Application & Waiting Time

Hello all,

I made a step 1 application last month which was rejected due to problems with the diploma, so I re-applied online, and spoke with my school to re-send everything again..

I recieved an email from ECFMG to wait for about 3 weeks to be processed, now it's 25 days and no reply from them, when I called they said "It's not on the system".. I was confused, so I checked with the cargo company and my school again, the package was delivered and recieved correctly..

What's wrong? should I wait more or is there something wrong?

Thanks people.

Default Please verify

There's two parts of the application process.

The online application and the documents from your school.

Here's what I understand from your post:
  • You have finished the online application and then they emailed you that your online application will be processed withing 3 weeks. Is that right?
  • Your school has resent your documents again and it has been received in ECFMG according to the courier they used. Is that right?

It looks like there's something wrong with you school documents. They either did not make to the clerk desk or it might be rejected again (God forbid).
I'd say you call them right now.
Calling the ECFMG may sometimes require that you call on several occasions until you get the agent that can really solve your issue.
Tell them clearly that you finished the online part and that your medical school package has been received 25 days ago.
Let us know the outcome after you call them ...

I called again, told them I was sure about the package and the agent who recieved it..they said they can't see anything wrong till now, and suggested I wait for one more week..

Is that normal? or is it really pointing to a rpblem? should I start freakin' out?

Did they confirm the receipt?
What status is seen in our OASIS account?

The one who replied said he's gonna check with my tracking number on the courier website, he said "it appears to have been recieved by someone in our office"..

The status in OASIS is "In process"..

Ah and there's something I hear:

Do your medical credentials need to be verified BEFORE taking an exam? I have a friend who has just sent his documents (just one week before me), things went smoothly, after exactly 3 weeks he got his permit and his medical credentials status was put on "Received and pending", so I don't think it needs verification first..

Any ideas?

As far as we know that the ECFMG has recently changed their policy. The new policy for IMGs is that you are not allowed to take an exam until your medical school credentials are verified. This is exactly what's happening with you. They are not allowing to take an exam until your credentials verified.

Oh yes, it happened several times in the past. One of my friends was waiting for over 2 months before her credentials were verified and she had no problems, it was just a pure ECFMG delay.

But lee-usmle, I am telling you I have a friend from the same school who sent his documents just one week before me, he recieved his permit, and is now waiting for credentials verification (recieved but pending verification as its said on OASIS)..did the policy change in this week?

Also my credentials status in OASIS is now set to "Not Recieved"..

I guess I should start freakin' out..

P.S. Anyone know if your eligibility period is sep/oct/nov/dec..what if you get your permit at september or november? will you still be eligible? or will you have to push it back?

I called again today, another employee answered and he said "It was not recieved by us", I said how could it be? the courier confirmed that it was delivered, he said "I can't help you, send everything again"..I was surprised, can my school re-send everything? is this duplication safe? what about my package?

All he said was, "I wouldn't wait if I were you, just send everything again"..

Remember the other employee said" give me about 10 working days, it might have been delayed"..

Any advice?

So now you have two conflicting answers from the ECFMG support agents.

I suggest you keep calling the ECFMG everyday until you get three consistent responses.

If their final response is that your documents were not received then your only solution is to send the documents again

Info my experience

Hi Zein!

I read this thread thoroughly, however, I could not understand what do u mean by the documents that ur medical school has sent ECFMG and r not received.
I mean medical school sends documents to ECFMG twice:

1- First they have to send the single envelope that should contain all the necessary forms ( Form 186, 187, 344, 345,one photograph) and two copies of ur medical diploma. When this envelope is received by ECFMG, first of all they start to process ur form 186 and once this form is considered valid, u will receive ur schedule permit. Meanwhile they submit the copy of ur diploma and some of the other forms in this envelope to Credentials Section of ECFMG. Subsequently the credentials section sends the copy of ur medical diploma to ur medical school.

2- Once this copy of diploma and other necessary forms r received by medical school, they have to verify these and also add ur transcript to these and send it to ECFMG.

Now plz specify, whether ur medical school has sent ECFMG the first envelope or the second one amongst above mentioned?

I know a doctor whose medical shool has just sent the above mentioned first envelope to ECFMG and as soon as his form 186 was processed and declared valid, he received his schedule permit. This was only about 3 months ago ( I mean this year ). The point mentioned by lee-usmle may be applied to Step 2 CS I think, not Step 1 and Step 2 CK.

If u r talking about the first envelope, let me tell u that courier services usually take about a week to submit it to ECFMG. Once it is received they need about one week more to open it. And once they open it they will write the date of it's recept in ur OASIS's application section. After this, they will process ur form 186 within three weeks, although mine was processed two weeks after it's recept.

My form 186 was received one week after it was sent to ECFMG and when I called them even 10 days later they said it is not received, however, only a couple of days after my call I was informed that my form186 was received five days ago i.e., seven days after it was send.

So keeping this in ur mind, plz count the time since ur medical school has sent ur documents to ECFMG and then compare that to this post.

Hopefully u find it helpful.
Let us know if u have further questions!!!!!!!!!!!

Thousand thanks Dr. Elham, actually when the docs were sent the 1st time, my 186 was accepted, but the application was rejected due to a problem with the diploma, so I told my school to re-send the final diploma + a translation..

The docs where received in the US (as stated by the courier's website) on the 12th of july, it doesn't say "recieved by ECFMG" of course, just a male employee's name..but now it's been nearly a month with no reply..the OASIS says "no medical credentials received", and the application's status is "in process"..

When I told the employee who answered me last time that the website states that the package was received by an employee, he said that he doesn't recognize that employee's name, and that he won't track that package, "I won't wait if I were you"..

Ok zein... so ur form 186 is accepted and the problem u face is with the verification of credentials....

No worries man!!! The main thing is that ur form 186 is accepted....and I hope that u r gonna receive ur permit soon.

Again I'd like to remind u that they might have received ur credentials but the fact might be that they have not opened the envelope yet. As soon as they open envelope, they'll update it in ur account and u would know it through OASIS.
U know!!! When my credentials were verified by my medical school and sent to ECFMG, I was informed through OASIS exactly 2 months after the recept of my credentials...I mean that the credentials department usually remains busy that it can take even months before one is informed of the recept....

I'd like to suggest u to carry on ur studies and wait a few days to recieve ur schedule permit.....

Idea! Good point

@ Zein,

I think Dr. Elham has a point here. So let's see if he's correct or not.
Go to OASIS and click on the "USMLE Application Information" on the left hand side and see the first section there titled "Certification of Identification Form" and tell us what status you see there.

If it is received and verified and valid then you should be receiving a scheduling permit soon and if not then you have to ask them about it and why it's not being sent.

If it is not received, then it's highly likely that your medical school package did not make it to Philadelphia.

OASIS says "186 is valid", but "Medical Credentials Not Recieved", as I said my application was rejected the 1st time I made it..due to, "This is not the final diploma, it's just a temporary one, send us the original", but they accepted the 186..[They accepted 186, but rejected the application]..

I got the final diploma 2 weeks later, so I told my school and for its translation to be sent again to ECFMG..since then the only thing that changed on OASIS was that the application status changed from "Rejected" to "In Process"..the status of 186 is set to "valid"..

Arrow Your tomorrow's phone conversation

So then in your tomorrow's phone conversation with them, say this
"I have a valid form 186. Why wasn't I sent a scheduling permit. Am I allowed to take the exam now or should I wait until my medical education credentials get verified?"

Alright, so I think I owe you guys an update, you really helped me a lot..
I have just got an email from ECFMG, saying my application is complete and that I should wait for a permit through this week, so I called ECFMG for two things:

1- When things started getting late, I resent everything again, no problem with that, but the problem is that I sent two translations for my medical diploma, one from a certified office and the other from my school itself. Both are the same buth the problem is with my birthplace..my school wrote it as the greater area, while the office wrote as it is in the original diploma, ( think of it as someone wrote you were born in Chicago, instead of Illinois), I asked them about it saying my papers were accepted, I don't want this second package to cause any trouble..So they told me about the sencond point here..

2- My OASIS account still has my credentials status as "Not Recieved", which is weird knowing that the same package had everything (credentials & application)..when I asked Sharon about this (the employee everyone told me about), she said it might be a good thing I re-sent things, 'cause it's not normal to be on on that status..I told her about the birthplace thing..she said she doesn't understand and will have to review things when she sees the package, I told her that the package is anyway directed to her (I put her name on the package before sending)...

Complicated, right?
Any comments?

Hi all,

Today I recieved an email from ECFMG, it had this sentence:

"According to new policy, ECFMG requested your medical school to include your final medical transcript when the school returns the verification of the medical diploma to ECFMG."

What does this mean? Do they need my marks through my study years? Is there something I should tell my school?

Woow, the never ending story!
The medical school transcript is the marks sheet of your medical school years. Call your school and tell them to send it. The problem however is that they did not mention whether they want the original or a certified copy!
So then again you have to call the ECFMG (also reply the email they sent you) and ask them what do they want the original or the certified copy.

I thought your credentials have already been sent to ECFMG

I don't even think my school knows about it, even though it's one of the oldest medschools. What's the usual? the original or a certified copy?

I'd usually they request a certified copy. Only The Medical Boards of California requires an original Medical School Transcript.
