I am an Intern applying for step 1. I should graduate in March 2013. I applied as a student for the eligibilty period of: (June, July and Aug. 2013). I have applied on December 2012 the online part (while i was considered a studend by ECFMG), then sent the signed form 183 and i have received the following message from ECFMG:

Quote:
To be eligible for Step 1 you must have completed at least two years of medical school by
the beginning of the eligibility period you selected. This eligibility requirement means that students must have completed the basic medical science component of the medical school curriculum. You must also be officially enrolled in medical school both at the time of application and on your test day.

You are not currently eligible for Step 1 or the information in your application was insufficient to
determine eligibility.
My mistake looks like this part: "You must also be officially enrolled in medical school both at the time of application and on your test day.

____________

Concerning applying as a student i mailed ECFMG before i apply as a student and they replied to me:

Quote:
Please be advised that ECFMG considers an applicant to be a medical school student until they have met all requirements to obtain their final medical school diploma.

In some instances, medical schools require that a student complete an internship before being issued their final medical school diploma. Even though the student has completed all classes required to graduate, they will not be issued their diploma and considered a graduate until they complete the internship.

As you are currently completing your internship to meet the requirements to obtain your MBBS diploma, you are still considered a medical school student per ECFMG’s aforementioned policy. Therefore, you must indicate that you are a medical school student when you complete your USMLE® exam applications until you have completed your internship.
Are they contradicting themselves??? I have applied specifically as a student because of this email! If anyone knows how to deal now i will appreciate your help.

Thanks.

To be registered for Step 1 , you must reapply by submitting a new online application completed in its entirety. If you choose to apply again on-line, you must complete all items and submit a new signed and sealed Certification Statement (Form 183).

Please be sure to use the USMLE/ECFMG Identification Number listed at the top of this letter on your new application and any future correspondence with ECFMG.

Note, if your application is rejected, the money you had paid for that application will automatically be credited to your ECFMG financial account. Thus, when you apply again using IWA, you may select the “Use my credit towards my total due” option in the payment section of the application.
