Question eligibility extension

My date for Step 1 is 20th March 2013 and my eligibility period ends in march 2013. I want to extend it. And then if I can't take exam on 20th March I want to apply for a date in April. Should I just go and extend my eligibility period get the new permit and reschedule after wards with prometric or do I have to cancel my prometric appointment before applying for the eligibility extension. Please help

Before you read the following, I suggest that you call both Prometric & ECFMG to ask for their advices They are very helpful.

---

From what I understand is that you can do either or...cancel with prometric first, then apply for the extension of eligibility period...or vice versa...but, if you know that you will not take the exam as scheduled...it's best to cancel it first bc 1. if you cancel late...there is a fee for everything...

----

All appointment change fees are paid directly to Prometric

http://www.usmle.org/frequently-asked-questions/

# 1-800-633-3926 is the number for "To schedule, reschedule, cancel and confirm appointments or for general testing information"

1) 31 or more days before (but not including) the first day of the scheduled test date: no fee
2) fewer than 31 days and more than 5 days before (but not including) the first day of the scheduled test date: $50
3) 5 or fewer days before (but not including) the first day of the scheduled test date: $110

When you cancel, they willl not make you pay for the above fees...it's only when you call back in the reschedule after you get your 3 months eligibility period and you know which date you plan to take your exam, then you call in and they will remind you that you have canceled your appointment before, and this is the fee that you have to pay based on your time frame .... see above (more than 31 days, more than 5 days, or less than 5 days)

In addition to paying the rescheduling fee for prometric...you also need to pay $65 for ECFMG to extend your 3 months...see below...

ECFMG: Eligibility for and Overview of the Request to Extend a USMLE® Step 1/Step 2 CK Eligibility Period (EPEx)

http://www.ecfmg.org/fees/index.html

https://secure2.ecfmg.org/emain.asp?app=iwa

$65 per exam

Log onto the ECFMG website and applied for an extension by paying and submitting the online fee of $65. Then it depends on your medical school to verify you and sponsor and once they approve you get an email.

General Inquiries For general inquiries and correspondence, contact ECFMG

By telephone: (215) 386-5900 (Telephone assistance is available between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Eastern Time in the United States, Monday through Friday.)

By fax: (215) 386-9196

By e-mail: info@ecfmg.org

By mail: ECFMG 3624 Market Street Philadelphia, PA 19104-2685 USA

----

After you have received your new 3 months period, and you are ready to reschedule your appointment with prometric, but, you have to contact their "Candidate Care" hotline...

North America
The office is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time; closed on local holidays.

Candidate Care representative...their number is 1-800-853-6769.

The Candidate Care representative will collect the late fee and he/she can also reschedule the new appointment for you.

Thank you. The thing is that I want to be safe. Because my deadline for eligibility extension is 25th April and if they reject my request then I will loose the march date as well. So can I cancel my appointment after getting the new permit and then reschedule?

Thank you so much. Ive gone through all of this and its v helpful. Just 1 question. My country of prometric falls under the malaysia center. And on my previous permit it says to cancel schedule or reschedule call their number. You have given the US numbers for prometric. So should I be calling the US one, or the one they have given the number of in the transcript?

Default eligibility period query

I had a query that if someone met with a natural health calamity like an RTA and is already running on the extension of triad and is hospitalized.wants to extend the triad in the same fee he paid for the exam is it possible to get the triad extended on the basis of medical grounds since it is a genuine problem?

Please anybody taking time out of his/her prep would be more than a blessing in disguise...thankyou and desperately waiting for the reply! Moderator pls help!

P.S : my eligibility period was Feb-march-april with extension its may-june-july!

you cant extend it again.

the reason you can extend CS or get money back is due to hazzard of passing disorder of bodily or air contact like TB, Influenza to your SP's.

What about those who dont hv such communicable diseases? Does that mean they cannot extend their cs dates?
