Unhappy GRADUATION DATE please help

Hi all,
I am an IMG. I entered medical school in oct 2004
completed final year in april 2009 after which i did internship up to may 2010.
got my diploma in may 2010.
yesterday I started filling the online part of step 1 application and got a few doubts
Now here are the questions.

1)DATE YOU COMPLETED REQUIREMENTS FOR FINAL MEDICAL DIPLOMA
(As internship is a requirement for final medical diploma I filled the column MAY 2010. Am I right?)

2)GRADUATION DATE
(Is it the date I passed my final year or the date I was issued diploma?)

3)NUMBER OF YEARS ATTENDED
(Is internship included which makes it 5 1/2?)

Please answer to my questions. I saved my application and am waiting for your reply

Hello!

I had the same doubts than you. I already called ECFMG and they make all may doubts very celar.
Here is my example:
I attended to my school from agoust 2001 - agoust 2007. In agoust 2007 we celebrated our "graduation", but after that we have to do a social service from agoust 2007 to agoust 2008. so.. conclusion...

ATTENDANCE DATE= AGOUST 2001 - AGOUST 2008 (DATE I GOT MY MED DIPLOMA )

NUMBER OF YEARS ATTENDED: 7 (MY CARREER LAST 6 YEARS, PLUS 1 MORE OF MY SOCIAL SERVICE = 7)

GRADUATION DATE= AGOUST 2008
DIPLOMA DATE= AGOUST 2008

I know it's a little extrange, but those are the correct answers confirmed by the ECFMG and approbed by my school.
Hope this helps you.

Regards

Unhappy HELP

Hey guys,
How to change attendance dates ??
I wrongly put my attendance dates Jan 2007 to Jan 2013 in stead of Dec 2006 to Dec 2012.
Does it matter or do i need to chnage it?? If I need to change it, could you tell me how I can do it ??

Thanks.

Default Graduation Dilemma

Need help Forums experts and ppl
I finished my internship in May 2012
applied for step1 with letter from college saying 'I have met criteria for Final diploma certificate in August 2012'.
Received Final degree in March 2013 which says i graduated on March 2013
SO what does ECFMG considers as graduation date??
The letter from my college saying i met criteria for diploma(Aug'12)? Or my actual final diploma (March'13)??
Please do let me know..
thanks a lot.

Default You want to hear a med school horror story? Please help with dates

Hi Sabio,

Perhaps you can help shed some light on the following situation and it will probably be a story you have never heard as this happens only once in a lifetime. Unfortunately, it happened to my entire class of 1995 (104 students)

Here I go...

I joined medical school in September 1995. However the medical school was de-recognized and discontinued by its affiliated university and the MCI (Medical Council of India). Hence all exams and clinical assessments were always postponed, as there was no administrative structure upon which to conduct, invigilate, evaluate, or assess them. I finished my first year (Anat, Biochemistry, Physiology) by 1999.

Soon after, I entered 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year. By 2005, I finished 4th year classes and clinical rotations (medicine, Surgery, Ob/Gyn) but had still not taken 2nd year (Micro, Pharmacology, Pathology, Forensic Sciences) or 3rd year (ENT, Ophthalmology, Preventative Medicine) exams due to red tape and bureaucratic issues which we went to the Supreme Court to fight against) All through this I was coming back home to the US to work (I was born and raised here). We finally got a supreme court order for the university to conduct exams. So, in 2005, I started taking my exams once a year whenever they did adhere to the court order and conduct them, all without the help of theory classes and clinical rounds (which i finished prior to 2005). Fortunately, I passed all exams on time through home study and prep. I finished med school in February 2009!! Hallelujah.

Next internship, my internship was delayed a year due to red tape again. I started it in April 2010 and finished it in March 2011. I graduated in commencement in February 2011, a week or two before i finished the internship. Internship over! Hallelujah!!

Next my actual degree..It took them almost a year to process it due to....no surprise, bureaucratic and administrative snafus (typical of indian processes).
Finally, on MARCH 15, 2013, I GOT MY DEGREE!!!! Unbelievable. The date of issue on the degree says December 15, 2012 (probably the month in which it was processed)......I probably spent the same amount of money as an AMG going back and forth to take th exams and get the degree. Luckily, no loans!! :O)

So here are the two million dollar questions my friends:

(1) What is my date of graduation?

(2) Will this long hiatus affect my EM residency chances? US Citizen, born and raised, prepping for Step 1, 3 months clinical experience, hold many certifications in EM courses (BLS/ACLS/AHLS/PALS, ITLS/ATLS), recently got certified as a Phlebotomist, EKG tech, Patient Care Technician, Insurance Examiner), and do research (about to publish a poster and article this year) in the Public Health Arena. i am also doing a 9 month Public Health certificate in HIV/AIDS (with Research component and maybe publication possibilities) from a Top 10 school.
In addition, I got registered as Nationally Certified Medical Assistant to help my cause (I can email you and show you how to do it without taking the National exam) if you post an answer to my questions. It's not really a well known loophole but it is duly and fully legal Maybe you can make some money working while you wait fro the promise land....
My journey was long, hard, and emotionally draining but I made it. I hope it is to some avail!! I survived and and happy to be here.
Any advise or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks for listening my friends.

2009, not when you paid or you did some return of service to have it released or whatever

Thanks Shima for the prompt reply,
No I did not pay the University to release my Diploma, Nor I returned back the University in the form of any service in order to release my Diploma,No...Not at all....
The University issued my Diploma in 2012 "irrespective" of anything.( since there is no obligation to get a diploma except clearing the final year medical scholl exams)
So considering these two different dates ( 2009 and 2012 ) with a two years gap in between, what will be my date of graduation? and my degree year ?

Please Help,
Thankyou.

That is confusing. How did you get the degree before completing the internship?

Basically in US terms, graduation date = date you met the requirements for diploma. From what I have understood from your message is in Bangladesh you do not have to do an internship to be issued a diploma (unlike India where diploma is issued only after completing the internship). So your graduation date will be 2012. You can put the internship you did in India under work experience in ERAS.

Hi, There has been alot of comments about Gradduation extension but there is no proper answer, especially from those who are done with residency requirements and have expeience from match seassons.

so Please read the senerio and advise all of us who are still in schools.

I will be an non US IMG when i apply to match in future. I am left with 3 months o graduate and it is now that i cam to know about nit and pick of reidency appication and factors for successful match besides step scores.
So IF I INTENTIONALLY LEAVE AN EXAM OF MY FINAL YEAR MARCH 2017 AND IN THIS WAY MY GRADUATION WILL BE DELAYED to MARCH 2018 WITH ONLY ONE EXAM TO PASS.
Now ADVANTAGES I can think of This are as follow:
1) Fresh Graduate when i apply to match of 2020 in september 2019.
2) Will complete USMLE step 2 during school, say in November 2017, by using 8 months (my college doesnt require to come to college for failed students)
3) There will be no mention of Fail in MSPE, only a times of pass will be mention on transcipts that may give clue to extension but not of failure.
3) after passing that one school exam in MARCH 2018, I can go for 4 month Electives from APRIL to JULY 2018 and right after that I will give CS in August 2018.
4) Return to home country in September 2018 and start 12 Month Paid internship along with step 1 prep.
5) After completing step 1 in JULY 2019, internship in AUGUST 2019 and electives, I will apply too match of 2020 in september 2019 and will apear as FRESH or within 2 YEAR limit.

DISADVANTAGE I CAN THINK OF and WANT you guys to answer whether they are correct or not:
1) ECFMG may consider abnormal behavior.
2)CAn affect match success???

Please answer this issue properly so that many students like me can make oursleves best candidates for future matches.
This is extremely important and I need advise from those only who have Match experience or have gone through the process in the past.

That's a long post. You seem to be very confused about the process.
From what I have understood in your post, you are required to complete an internship for the medical degree to be awarded (from India?). If that's the case, you are only eligible to do electives during the internship (the final year of medical school). Pass your exam in March 2017, start your internship, do electives or give step 1 and then do electives, give the other steps by July 2018, finish your internship, graduate and apply for the match in September 2018. Again I'm assuming you're from India because you mentioned internship.

Hi,

I read your reply on my graduation date question. First of all I want to thank you for considering to reply
This is my first time posting here, otherwise I was a reader.
I think now you can answer my confusions.

I am from Pakistan, not from India. Here I will be a graduate right after passing final exam and will be given certificate as well. Then its upto me when I want to do Internship which is basically House Job of 1 year to get License to practice. The problem is that I wont get Paid for 12 months house job if I start an year late. E.g. I will graduate in March 2017 and need to start house job from May to April to get PAID. Longer I miss this period, the longer I have to do UNPAID Job.

I hope now you can have a better picture here.

BTW Good Score Man or MaM :P. I am attempting Step 2 ck before step 1. you can definitely guide me on this as well.
Thanks.

Oh I see. It's definitely tricky then. Since you'd be a graduate after passing the exam in March 2017, you'll no longer be eligible for electives. I am not sure when folks from Pakistan do the electives (unlike India where we do electives during our internship which is a requirement for the degree, looks like you guys do electives in your final year before passing the final exam). I don't know if electives are worth intentionally failing an exam though. Won't the attempt be mentioned in your transcript? Any attempt in medical school is not regarded very positively. Though LoRs from electives will really help you, I'm don't know if it's worth failing on purpose. Lot of people get strong letters from observerships and match. But if you really want to do electives, your plan seems fine.
Haha thanks but I have pretty average scores. Aim to score above 250 to be competitive as those are the folks that usually get calls from good places. I used the standard resources for steps..first aid uworld and kaplan for step 1, kaplan uworld and mtb for step 2ck. Message me if you have any questions. Gpod luck

One other thing. If you get the degree after passing the exam in March 2018, you cannot go for electives after that. You can only do electives before you get the diploma, i.e. between March 2017 to March 2018 (if you decide to intentionally fail the exam)

Thanks. I assume you are from India. So it comes natural from me to send love to Indian fellas. Don't watch news channels. They are shitty on both side as we know
My college don't mention Fail specifically. They Simply put the date of Passed exams only.Which can give raise to questions about delay
well, Certainly Electives is one of the advantages of extension in graduation.
-Other is Fresh Graduate for many programs
-eligible for 2 year Graduate limit of 40% Family medicine programs and a few Neurology. (primary advantage I can think of)
-Will be able to get PAID House JOB.
- No gaps in CV after graduation as well.

Of course My info is based on scenerios I read on this forum and can be quite wrong. So You being in for Actual match can steer me in the right direction.

If it's not mentioned as fail, then ya definitely go for electives and give the exam in 2018. Remember that you have to apply 4-6 months in advance for most elective spots and plan accordingly. Strong letters from electives will definitely help your application. What I would have done is - skip the exam in March 2017, apply for electives (November to March months are easier to get), start step 1 or ck prep (preferably step 1) and schedule the exam before going for electives (ideally 6 months prep), apply for cs around July 2017 and give cs after the electives, finish your exam in March 2018, study for other step and give it by August 2018 and apply in September 2018. That's what I would have done but if you have to do the paid internship you'll have time to study and finish step 3 as well.

Many many thanks Saxo.... I really wish you to get the best residency of your choice.

Graduation date = date of internship completion - March 2016 (the date diploma was issued - August 2016. You might be asked why the delay between internship completion and diploma. I was asked that in couple of my interviews).
Years attended = date of entry to date of internship completion

will that delay be a problem? it was because my college messed up my dates.

Won't be a problem. But just be honest and say what happened when you're asked in the interview.
