Question Sending credentials for verification without applying for an exam!! Possible??

Hey everybody,

Since I could not find the answer of my question on the ECFMG website, and their phone line is flooded with calls atm, I thought some experienced forum members could help me out.

I have already given my Step 1, have Step 2 CK this December iA, and plan to give CS end of next April iA. I am still a medical student, and I will graduate in June 2014. This means that I will already have GIVEN ALL EXAMS before graduation iA. I have heard from some people that it is not possible to send credentials for verification without applying for an exam. But I won't have any exams left to apply for. Can somebody please help me out?

I believe that you send your medical school diploma when you graduate and you have to wait for them to verify your credentials with your medical school. There are some additional forms that you would have to submit (I can't remember which ones exactly, I think 344 and 345), but just give ECFMG a call to make sure. Be aware that they might be pretty busy right now with residency applicant questions so you might be on hold for some time.

Thank you for reply. I also wanted to confirm whether it is necessary to apply for an exam before sending the credentials. Or whether I can send them along with these forms you mentioned as soon as I graduate without having to apply for an exam

No, I don't think it would be necessary to send an application for an exam in order to submit these forms. Actually, I think the only form that you need to submit an application for an exam is 186. If you have already submitted form 186 and it is still valid, then you should be able to forward 344 and 345 (or even 187 if it applies) without an exam application. I am not 100% sure about this, but it makes sense because if you've passed Step 1, 2CK, and 2CS then you will have no other exams to apply for (Step 3 requires ECFMG certification)! Just call ECFMG to make sure and make sure to update the forum so that we are all well informed on this topic.

All the best!

Just wanted to post an update: it is indeed possible to send credentials for verification to ECFMG without applying for an exam. Just send forms 344 and 345 along with your diploma but do not send form 187. That's all there is to it. Hope it helps someone who would be in a position similar to mine

Hey. Ill be appearing (atleast planning to) for step 2cs in june 2014 n ck in august 2014.. so how early can I apply for certification.. n do I need to have both the above cs n ck scores at the time of submitting for certification.. can it be that I submit the forms 344 n 345 Without having the cs n ck scores.. and ecmfg can start the verification process n I get my scores in the meantime.. Im just asking is this possible.. cuz I need to be eligible for next year match.. (wishful thinking I know.. lol)

Hi dr.kriti,

As far as I know, it is possible to send your credentials for verification (I'm assuming you're a graduate here). I don't think you need to have your exam scores in hand to do that. And it's a good way to save time too
