Question Extra-Curricular Charity Acitivities for Residency CV!

I have an opportunity to volunteer in a cleft-lip & palate repair surgery camp at my hometown which is being conducted by Rotaplast, a charitable organization sponsored by international Rotary clubs and it'll constitute a good number of American doctors.
They also said they'll be giving the volunteers a certificate & recommendation letters. But the thing is I'm not on vacation & I'll fall a bit behind and may run into a bit of trouble & get myself a headache with the matters at med school during the 10 days of the mission.
So my question is, should I go for it & miss out a few days from school cause it'll give me something 'appealing' to add on my CV? Or, would it not matter on my residency application?
I know that I'll be missing a great experience & I really want to go but I still just wanted to know how much does charitable activities matter on a CV.

I would highly appreciate any prompt reply.

Thanks.

Volunteering is one of the most admired sections in your CV by residency program directors and any employer in USA.

There's a whole section in ERAS that ask for volunteering stuff that you've done.

I strongly urge to go for it.

Also, click on the volunteer tag link at the bottom of this thread to read more about this issue.

Thanks StepTaker I'm gonna be more vigilant about volunteering opportunities from now on.

One more Q, I've started going but since I haven't 'registered' my name as a volunteer, I doubt they're gonna give me a certificate in the end. Should I request them to give me one or is it not needed?
