Idea! Do Not Let People Discourage You

i just wanted to share something with u guys:

i was on call last nite and there was this orthopaedic resident that took an interest into starting a conversation with me while he rested on one of the benches outside. i was actually on my way into the ED to meet my supervisor.

so after he summoned me, he starts to talk about how difficult the life of a resident is and how much money he has to put in to specialize. In indonesia the residents have to pay about 30k (USD) to specialize.. so then i tell him about going to the US where it is free and well, he doesnt believe me. he says i am mistaken.. sigh. i keep quite because i didint wanna be disrespectful.
then he asks if i have picked a specialty, i said yes. and when i told him, he said no way ill stick to it. according to him everyone changes their mind once they start internship... sigh. i tried to say no.. but he went on and on to discourage me.
i felt so angry when i left that place. i felt like i shouldve just stood up for myself and say, NO, i HAVE made up my mind of what specialty i wanna take up later and I KNOW about going to US .. but i guess i chickened out. but as Jack Canfield says, i should stand up for myself.

i had no one else to share this with so i tot id share it with u guys. i have forgotten that incident because i read my goals everyday. i just wanted to remind you guys that there might be ppl discouraging u from time to time because of their jealousy and just how they cannot accept anyone doing better. GET STRONGER everytime someone is jealous and WORK HARDER. i cannot stress how happy i am when ppl in this forum post their results here saying they got 99 or over 90. so keep loggin on to here to hear our members' experience and do not get discouraged.

good luck everyone in taking the step 1!

Some people who post high grades are either discouraging people or advertising for certain services (with full respect to the honest people). In 2010 match many people with low scores and attempts matched and even I know few of them have no USCE. Bottom line advice is that each person is a separate case, although PDs prefer those with high scores, but they know exactly how to pick the hard-working reliable people from those who have a byhearting ability, not more.
Goodluck

sometimes i feel this is like a disease amony us doctors i dont kn why everyone around us inplace of helping try to discourage the new beginner i just dont understand onething if there is one good doctor in society is that wrong there are so many pt to look after and we all could excell in one or other field i guess ppl in other proffession can keep secret to success to them but if medical line i guess if u die keeping secret to treat ur pt with u then there was no point of u getting a degree as i feel life is all about letting other learn to teach them for future generation so that when we are gone other are there to do the prestigeous work of been a doctor
seetal to tell u infact pl are same all over world even if i start telling u my stories u wont feel u hear somehting new ppl keep telling that taking a chnce to usmle is wasting of time but i guess it matter the most what u want rt

hi seetal, i came from the same country and i can imagine your frustation. don't give up. i am proud to see someone like you (probably working in hospital somewhere right) still manage to study hard for USMLE, which i know very few people will try (to do). most people will say: crazy, what are you doing this for, there's lots more easy options in life, bla3. it's up to us to disprove it =) and maybe bring some change in our country, who knows? :P

Default one should never get affected fr sure....

i am a fourth yr student. when i decided to give step 1 aftr ma second yr and many of ma seniors were like hovering round me not to go for it. only becouase dey didnt get d chance. i didnt listen to any o dem. and ended up gettin 98(235). so i wud really like suggest ol ma friends...we only have a single life...take ol d risks..enjoy...we have no one to answer to.....the thot of losing sumthing is the core reason why we loose sumthing...be free....do watever u like or feel doin.....we r doctors guys.....we ve to be pure and supporting...der r few among us who think of em in grandeosity...let em think.....

Default thx Seetal for starting this thread

Seetal, thx for starting this thread...
I had that kind of experience too...
I already accepted in residency training in my country but then I prefer to quit and focus on USMLE. Well...of course people trying hard to prevent me from making this decision. It was hard at that time....probably was the hardest phase in my life. My seniors said that it would be a waste of time and money event my parents discouraged me. Luckily I still have my fellow interns, they are very neutral and supportive eventhough I know they were sad knowing I left the program. Well...all I want to say...just be free to do what you love to do, with hardwork, strong motivation and determination...I believe u will succeed in every field that u choose. Well, there will be time when u're feeling down, thinking that you must have been making wrong decision. At that time, just go back to what motivate u to choose this way, talk to ur close friend and fam, and if you still don't know where to go...just log in here and share it to us. I believe there will be someone who can help u.

Good luck to all of us....!!!
