Question Dilemma - Extending internship in India for US electives.

OK this might have been discussed elsewhere but I'm in desperate need of direct help.
I'm nearing completion in my internship program here in India (technically the final year of undergrad) and I want to pursue elective programs in the US. As it turns out we need to apply atleast 6 months in advance so basically I'll have to extend my internship. I know it's very possible; I just wanna know how to approach it -

Q1 - What should I mention in the "expected time of graduation" section in the application form. 'Cause it's obviously not fixed; it depends on the number of months of extension I settle for.
Anything specific should be mentioned in the Dean's letter?

Q2 - What is the most ideal way of "extending" my internship? Skip the last 5-10 days and put a hold on acquiring the completion certificate right?

Thanks a ton. In dire need of advice.

I will suggest you not to skip any part, because in your eras document you will have to point to a break and that does not go well with PDs. How about you finish your stuff and delay applying for completion certificate and final license...........I would still look for another opinion on this matter. Dont rush into deciding something wrong.....Good Luck

Thanks for the quick reply. I couldn't have imagined an internship gap could figure anywhere in the ERAS application. Are you certain about it? 'Cause I believe it's an internal affair and it's not like I'm taking multiple attempts in passing an academic subject or something.
And about the other thing; sounds like a good idea but I really don't know how could I just refuse acceptance of the completion certificate. And anyways technically it would mean the same thing right? Extended internship.

Thanks..

Actually I am not sure about the system in your med school. In some schools you have to apply for completion by submitting requisite documents that you completed 1 year in various specialities and sub specialities.
It is different thing to have a break in between your course and having the certificate late.
I would still suggest to take a second opinion, because this is my perception.

Even I am on verge of extending my internship just for the sake of applying for the electives but not able to decide on whether I should delay in filing for internship completion certificate after completing my postings or have a break in between the postings go for electives and then complete the remaining term ...!!
Which one is a better way to do this!.?!
Thanks a lot for the inputs ,, I really appreciate any help !!

Hi

Point no 1. I personally dont think it is a very good option to delay your graduation unless it is extremely important. I feel you should 1st work out your options. Many places start reviewing applications for electives only 2 months prior so you can still apply. And some places which say that they dont accept applucations after a certain deadline also do so if they have vacancies. So you can try your luck!

Second thing about how to delay your internship... That totally depends on your home university. My university had rules to fill out an internship completion application and not doing that and submitting on time meant delaying the graduation. Also we had only one option, graduating on time or 6 months later. 6 months is a lot!! So please clarify all this from your parent university.
As for the expected date of grad ask your university again. You just have to mention the month and year and that pretty much doesnt vary.

Good luck!

Once you have decided to delay it, it is BEST to speak to someone from your school and university. Completing the postings and not filling the completion form should not create a problem later as your dates of postings will be of this time and you may have to answer as to why you havent filled the completion form. At the same time, completing the postings once and for all and getting done with it is definitely a good thing! Work out your options, talk to some seniors and see whats best!

Good luck!!

The same dilemma I am going through !!!
I would evaluate all the pros and cons and then make a decision !!
I was thinking more about the situation wherein this could be seen as a negative point in my CV by the PDs at the time of IV's !!
Would it be ?? Should i justify it , when asked, that I did it for the sake of electives .. Is it a wise answer ??!!

I am not the right person to answer this as I too am just in the process of the USMLE and have no idea as to what may happen... The best is to ask a person who has matched already. I have seen quite a no of people delay their graduation and my guess would be that this shouldnt be such a big issue as you will have a valid reason and documentation of the cause of delay. But thats just what I feel.
You need to weigh the pros of doing an elective vs that of graduating on time! Considering the weightage now given to USCE for a match, my guess again is the same

Good luck!!

I'm exactly in tge same position as where you were. I'm an Indian too...
I'm confused if I should break my internship, or just graduate and do Observerships.
Could you please tell me what you did?
