Help Worried About my Slow Typing Speed for CS Exam?

Hi all,

I am preparing myself for the CS exam and I have heard that due to having very limited time, typing fast is extremely important. I am not a fast typist and i am worried this will cause problems for me.

I just got my CK score of 267 and I got 256 in step 1.

Do you have any suggestions and if you could share your experience, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Default yes

Yes, time is cruical , you have only 10 min, but you can add time on from PE, if youre able to save it.I was practicing in the begining of prep 2 PNs /day, then more and more, so 1 week before test was doing 10 PNs/day. Practice and practice, use abbreviations, it really helps!
Good luck!

I took a live course and will take the actual exam soon.

Ten minutes sound like plenty of time, turns out differently.
Practice, practice, practice,
put as much effort as time you have

Yes, typing fast is very important factor in the cs exam.

To avoid anxiety, You better try to ignore the sound of the keyboard strokes in the hallway during the 10 minutes allotted for the patient note. (it sounds like tik, tik, tik, ttik, tik, tok, tok, tak, ttik, tik......)

Of course, practice is very important.

But If you have time (like 2 or 3 months) till the exam and you don't use touch typing, I highly recommend to learn touch typing (which is typing on the keyboard without looking at it) which can dramatically increase your typing speed. Even if you couldn't raise your typing speed high enough before the exam, it will be beneficial to you later on when you work in US. You will find that all the staff in the hospital are touch typing with super-fast speeds.

You can search google for "touch typing programs", "typing tutor" or "learning touch typing".......

It is hard in the beginning, but once you grasp the basics, you will be surprised by how fast you can type.

Good Luck

Post How I improved typing speed

Before start working in the hospital, I downloaded a game called "Typing of the Dead". As you can tell from the name, if you don't type the letters popping out from the zombies' head correctly and speedy, you will be tear apart by the zombies'.

In order to survive, I learned touch type within one week. But be careful, this game is really addictive! ;-)

Also check the USMLE step 2 CS website and look for the accepted abbreviations.
I hate to use abbreviations so I'm training to write like that now.

In Dr. Wolffe's live course we were adviced to type the vital signs like this:
92, 14, 120/80, 36.5

I've done the test three times and the best time I've got is 84 words. I think I will try harder. It is a good practice test. Thanks.
