Star Alternative Jobs for Those Who Couldn't Match

There are big number of USMLE passed candidates who doesn't match into their residency after an enormous struggle, and for some it takes years to be match into their choice specialty but by the time many of us burn out completely i.e. psychologically, financially and socially.

So the question is can we only practice medicine with MD qualification or there could be more and better opportunity exploited out there.

Please share your ideas, suggestion or experience of someone who has successfully made transition into non-clinical environment.
How easy and hard it could be for a physician to find an alternative career path?
What industries as physician we can enter into?

The industries that I have seen people get into if they fail the match are the following:
  • Physician assistant, Paramedical staff, Ultrasound technician (most of these require short courses to be licensed)
  • Health Insurance, such as insurance claimer (also may require some sort of short education and licensing)
  • Research Institutes, such as research assistant or participating in research projects
  • Medical Admin, such as private clinic managers, residency program coordinator, ..etc
  • Non-licensed physicians, such as cruise ship doctors, tourist places, Golf Courses, ..etc
  • Medical Equipment Sales, Pharmaceutical Sales (you can not work as Drug representative but you can participate in sales and promotions)
  • Medical Education, such as lecturers or teacher assistants at Kaplan Medical and others
  • Biomedical Universities and Colleges, such as Anatomy dissection technician, Pathology slide prep, ..etc (this is great place to hook up and make connections which can increase your matching chances)
  • Match Companies, such as entrepreneurship in creating a company that help IMGs match into residency
  • Translation Services, such as translating your mother language to English in big hospitals
  • International Affairs, such as working in the International Patient section in big hospitals, again translation and communication
  • Medical Transcription, working as medical transcriptionist
  • Billing, such as working as medical billing technician in private clinics and groups
Also check the Job-Opportunities tag link at the bottom of this thread.

I have to say that finding such jobs is not an easy path but most of the people that I know have eventually got into something, by the way, some of them have really made great success and they will never go back to the clinical track! One example, is friend of mine who took a 3-months medical transcriptionist course and then he landed a good job where he was making 80K per year, then he started his own medical transcription company and he's now making at least 300K per year!

Would appreciate if others add to the above list as I might have missed many.
