Listening Volunteering as an US experience ?

Does volunteering in a health care system in the states count as an US medical experience ?
and if so where does it lie from electives and observerships ?

Observership and externships themselves are some kind of volunteering. You are working without being paid that basically defines volunteering.

Other types of volunteer like helping in communities and humanaterian aids would certainly be appreciated by residency programs.

I know a friend who had low scores but he got into a very good program just because he was working in "doctors without borders" in his country.
