Planning 2011 match application issues!!!

Hello,

I know I shouldn't be thinking so negatively but I cant help it!
So, I've been preparing for step 1 for a while now, on and off, basically by covering the new Kaplan videos. Im planning to take the first step in early May.
Once I finish that I will try my best to finish step 2 CK and CS during the summer.

The problem is that the way I see it, I will get all my scores by late September maybe even mid October. I have a LOR from an american doctor, and of course plenty of LOR from doctors from Europe!! Great deans letter and some clinical research. Oh, and im an american citizen, but a graduate of European medical school and currently living and working in Europe.

I want to apply for neurology, and I hear that its been getting more competitive lately. I fear that my late application and lack of american LOR and USCE together with my late application will be my downfall.

My question to u is: Should I apply for the 2011 match or just finish my steps without pressure and apply in 2012???? Also if the second choice is better, what can I do in the meantime in USA (work?research?etc) since I want to move back by November???

Sorry for the long post and a GREAT thanks for your help in advance

Default Here's a suggestion

Neurology residency programs usually send all their invitations (to IMGs) by mid October, so you will be at great disadvantage.

I'd say you work on Match-2013 (apply in September 2012 and get matched in March 2013).

When you come to USA in November 2011, try to do USCE in any form, be it observership, externship, research (the latter is the best) and get US LoRs while you do so, this will greatly enhance your profile and hopefully you'll be in good shape by September 2012.

Oh, by the way, since there's no hurry this year. You can take more time studying for the steps and make sure to get high 99 in both of them

@rasheed
Thank you for your advice. I decided that I will take my steps when i feel ready and not rush into anything. By mid September I plan to have taken Step 1 and Step 2 CK for sure, so I guess I will just apply for this years match with that information alone.
Yes, I probably wont get many interviews, and yes, I probably wont match, but I got nothing to lose. Unless of course by applying this year I may ruin any chances for 2012 match. Is that the case????

I just have no clue where to start looking for USCE or for research jobs since I havent lived in the US for like 12 years

I just really want to start clinical work already!!!

Isn't it also possible to apply for a preliminary year whenever?? (which is a requirement for Neuro???)

You will lose two things:
1) The money you'll use to apply in ERAS.
2) Few residency programs filter second-time applicants, so in 2012 when they see that you are a second-time applicant, they'll filter you out. But let me repeat myself, FEW programs only do that.

There are two types of neurology residency, Categorical and Advanced, for the former you don't need a prelim year and for the latter you need a prelim year.
You apply for Prelim year at the same time you apply to any other residencies, using the same ERAS, same NRMP, same matching season.

So basically my only option in the meantime (after I finish the steps and before I match) is to go around NY state (where I would live) and look for research jobs???

I'm totally clueless on how one would look for those jobs. Can someone please clarify? Are they easy to find, do they pay decently, should I have some sort of prerequisite?

I mean here in my current hospital, its the residents who do the clinical trials and the research. We don't have and outsiders helping out or anything.

Not only research, you have the options of observerships and externships.
To get an idea about these read the threads listed here:
