Default Gap between graduation year and year of applying for residencies

Hi ,
I'm a Final Year Medical graduate from India. I have one more month of internship left in India to complete my graduation.
I am currently doing my one month clerkship in Harvard Medical School in Paediatric Nephrology.
I want to get into a Surgical Residency program in the US.
I have planned to do research in India as well as in the US hopefully.
How helpful is research in India to get into a US Surgical Residency Program ?
If I am graduating in 2014 and apply for Residency match in 2017 , will the three year time gap matter?

The year Gap will matter to a certain degree. Try to complete your steps in 1 year.

Good question. Im also in the same situation , in addition I have a 3 year gap. Having said that I have a feeling that it will be considered a gap.
