Kalos ton patriwti!

First off, dont get overwhelmed and overly anxious about the procedure.
This forum is, to my opinion, the best one out there regarding info for the USMLE.

I personally just took step 1 this July.

The time needed for preparation for step 1 varies greatly from person to person, the average time is considered to be 6 months, but I know people who managed in 3mo and others who needed almost a year of prep. I took about 8 months but I was very on and off my study routine in the first 4 months.
My advice to you is the following: (info I gathered from reading this forum and also from my own personal experience)
-Materials needed: Kaplan books/DVD's, First aid for step 1(FA), Goljan audio/notes
-Qbanks: UsmleWorld (gold standard in my opinion), Kaplan Q bank, UsmleRx (if u need an extra one)
- Apply for the exam early on: It is a fairly long procedure just to apply for the step1 exam. Do it early in your studies so that it wont eat up study time late on.
- You can take the exam in Athens or Thessaloniki.

The basic method is reading kaplan books (make notes in FA if u need to), overview kaplan lecture videos, doing many many questions (add more notes to FA), read kaplan books again if necessary, do more questions, turn to FA as your reference book from here on and basically overview it whilst doing question blocks and try to score higher by reviewing the chapters in FA that you have the lowest scores in your Qbanks. During all this time, at several points in time, it is wise to register and buy an online assessment examination (mini test simulation) that will test you and give u a usmle score prediction along with a table showing your performance in different subjects. These are called NBME tests. There are about 8 forms I think and I suggest to take one 2 months before actual exam date, again 1 month before, again 2 weeks before then the final one 5 days before the real thing. This way you can see you progress and if you are not happy with your prediction you can postpone your real exam.

Anyway, this is the most basic of info needed for step 1, there is tons more that you will find on your journey!

KALI EPITIHIA!!!!!

So i guess you had graduated when you started preping for step 1!

Did it work for you?? I mean, travelling to US, staying there (living costs...) and paying for Kaplan courses?? Is it better than preping and sitting the exams during med school? Did moving to US make your preparation easier (communication with other candidates, language, tutors etc.)?

Sorry for all these questions but i really need to know!

My situation is a bit different than what you think. I am a American citizen and I went there to do a the prep course during my 4th year of Medical school, thats where I got the books. The living costs were lower for me since I have my own house, etc.

I didnt take step 1 back then, I decided to graduate then take step 1, which was this year. I cant say if its better to take it during med school or after, I guess you must choose for yourself which way works for you. It is generally said that if u take it during med school its better since once you graduate ur ready to go, plus during ur last year of med school u can apply for rotations in the US (and most hospitals require a step 1 score for this).

Language was never an issue for me since im bilingual, but Im sure that if u decide to go for the course or to do a rotation in the US it will improve your verbal skills.

Now, to say if the kaplan courses are worth the money or not. I cant really tell you, I dont think its my place to make this decision for you. Personally I enjoyed the time there, it was very motivating and you meet plenty of people who can give u tons of advice. I can say this, if you are a diligent student with a good foundation of medicine and you are disciplined enough to study on your own on a daily basis then maybe you can skip the live prep. On the other hand if u are the type that needs the extra motivation and push then it will help you.

Thanks adorisz!

I see now...
I agree that it's preferable to sit step 1 during med school. Mainly because, as you said, rotations in US require passing step 1.

I wish you good luck! Hope everything works for you from now on...

Hey swimgo!!!
It's really nice to see greek med students in this forum.

I'll do my best to help you... Actually, the amount of information you ask for is pretty big! The answers you seek lie into the exam experiences and preparations of other forum members.

Oh my goshhh....
I didn't expect that someone would reply to my first post.
It's really shoking knowing that someone from your country is preparing for this exams, has the same dreams with you,the same "ambitions" and the same warries given the fact that in greece we don't have the required information needed in order to do a residency in usa...
Thank you for the information,I'm really grateful.
In which level are you?Have you taken any test?Did you finish your medical school?

My pleasure helping you out...

It's really good getting into knowing things this early on in your med school. It will help you a lot! One of the reasons is the thing you mentioned about getting electives in US later on. Something you need step 1 for...

I'm in med school too. And nope.. no steps taken yet.
