Philippines IMG from the Philippines

Greetings everyone! I am an IMG of more than 10 years. I'm 40 yrs old and I'm contemplating of just starting to take Step 1 next year. The reason for my misgivings on taking the USMLE is that I am not sure if by the time I pass all the steps and get into a residency program, I will be too old to pursue a career in Pathology. I really need your sound advise on this so I know what my options are if ever I need to get a more downgraded work in healthcare just to start earning for my family and at the same time pursue my passion in laboratory work.

My story is that I graduated in Medicine in 1995 and pursued Pathology residency in my country. I became an active pathologist after that for 9 years until I met my husband who happens to be a US citizen who petitioned me here in America. I just got here February of this year and have been preoccupied with our 2-year old and 5-month old boys (i'm sort of a latebloomer ). Reviewing can be quite a challenge when I have my hands full with our kids (and my husband ) so I only get to do it at night when everyone's asleep - the reason why I am giving myself a year before I start Step 1.

Any advise is hugely appreciated as I totally feel lost right now on how to go about pursuing to become a pathologist here in the US. Thanks so much and more power to this group!

hello there IMCV! just seeing the familiar word "kababayan" lights up my face and makes my day. so happy to hear from a PinoyMD here at the forum thanks for making my day. i would be honored to be part of your friends' list. i wish you all the best in your review. as for me, I will probably take the exam by May/June of 2012 if my review schedule goes as planned. Or may resort to some other favorable option when the need arises. Just hoping for the best! Ingat and Godbless!

Show Teeth young IMG too from phil

Hello laarnijoy,imcv, and sabio,

I am a young IMG too. YOG 1996 and did some field research (efficacy study) in the "bundoks" and then IM residency. Was not planning to be here but was part of the 3rd wave of filipino doctors. I call it BSN (Bana Sa Nurse or Asawa Ng Nurse). Arrived here in 2007 and took MLE
>1 (x3) too much confidence
>2 (x1) easier because done clinics
> CS (x2) simplified patient notes and forgot to counsel
Has been working in a telemetry floor since I arrived (not an RN but ECG tech). First time to attempt match (2012). Do not know what the outcome will be but I think will be "madugo".

I've read from forums that they used FILTERS for matching and number 1 is the step 1 score. So better do good in your step 1. For me it is too late. Cannot go back. So I need a miracle.

I understand the passion but be more flexible (I think). Later you can RESET your NORMALCY. I know you can understand it later

Default @IMG from Philippines

It is tough indeed to start a family and review for the USMLE. My opinion is, when taking the USMLE, make it your only chance and make it good. Good means you need to have a score in the 90's or 200's (in the three digit score format). Note that they will now start reporting scores in the three digit format. Since you graduated more than ten years ago it is going to be tough for you to get into a program if your scores are not that high.
If you can't make it, think of something else like studying to be a nurse or better still if you are a pathologist and have a medical technology degree try to challenge the Med Tech boards. Sometimes we FMG's find it hard to imagine ourselves working in a different role other than being what we've been educated to be. Blame that on the time spent studying just to get our M.D. degree. But sometimes that is reality here in the US. They have raised the bar so high that only the ones with excellent scores get to be invited for interview. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Idea! hello everyone :)

i dont even know if this thread is active - but i want to post anyway
first off, i'd like to introduce myself.
i am a recent graduate here in the philippines (march2012). i've been married for 4 years with a 3 year old daughter and is currently pregnant for 3 months. my husband is a nurse who recently turned citizen and we're expected to move there by the end of this year.
since i'm pregnant and all, my family decided for me to not do PGI here and just study for the mle. after lurking around a lot of forums, i believe im now more scared than before! haha! im studying but i cant mimic the 8-10 hours a day sked the american graduates. the best i have is like 4hours a day i hope i'll catch on soon because im scared if i take to long to cover everything that i might just forget! hai.
oh, and btw, they have already faced out (i think) the 2digit score reporting for the mle. they are now reporting the 3digit scores in residency programs.
before, a score of 230 and above is equal to a 99+. but it seems its not like that now. reporting can now be 260/90 or 260/89.

i would like to enter an IM program in the future and i hope i reach the quota.

right now, 2012, i think (based on forums) an IMG needs
210+ to be matched in some program
230+ to have a good score for an american graduate
240+ to have some leverage as an IMG
250+ to have a very good score
260+ to be prioritized in any program you wish
270+ to be the number one priority (not really number 1 priority but you do get my point)

hope this helps! im in metro manila and id like an online study buddy. arrrgh. studying now promise. less procrastination.

I'd like to remind you the mean scores for Step 1 was 222 when I took it, and 1 SD was 20. Meaning 68% of the group who took it got a score between 202 - 242.

In terms of getting 250/260/270, only 30% of the the people will get it, so keep this in perspective.

Also, scores aren't everything, almost all programs exclusively look at the complete application and therefore, scores are only a part of the game.

There have been people who have matched with less than stellar score (190 etc.), so dont let the score game scare you.
