Question Getting into residency without USCE!

whether the US clinical electives are absolutely required for
getting a residency or not?, I mean if i am getting a good score say double
99 then should i go for electives or not....actually i am asking you because going
for electives is an expensive thing so can i just skip it and work
hard to get a good score? I have few example of people with double 99 getting residency without US electives...Kindly guide me in this regard...

Yes, you can get into residency without USCE if you are a fresh graduate and if you have high scores.

Hello Masabk77,

Although there may be a chance to secure residency with high USMLE scores, that is not what residency programs solely look for. There are various factors to securing a residency position. According to the Selection Criteria for Residency, the top five selection criteria for those applying to residency were (1) Grades in required clerkships, (2) United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 score, (3) Grades in senior electives in specialty, (4) Number of honors grades, and (5) USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) score. As you are able to gather from this survey, aside from your USMLE scores, residency programs look for an applicant’s U.S. hands on clinical experience. Residency programs want to see that you are well-rounded with a complete application. High USMLE scores are just a part of that complete application. Furthermore, there are many IMG’s who have scored highly on their USMLE’s, but have not received a residency position, nor even residency interviews, due to their lack of U.S. clinical experience. If you are interested in finding ways to obtain U.S. hands on clinical experience in a more affordable matter, please feel free to private message me.
