Portugal Cardiothoracic Surgery in the USA

Hello everybody.

I am a Portuguese Cardiothoracic Surgery trainee, attending 3rd year of residency at Oporto, Portugal. I am thinking about finishing my training in the US. Can you tell me if CT Surgery is a competitive speciality in the US? In your opinion, how long will it take to prepare myself for the USMLE exam?

Thanks a lot for your answers.

Paulo

Cardiothoracic Surgery is a fellowship that you have to do after finishing 4 years of general surgery residency.
For official information see here
http://www.nrmp.org/fellow/match_nam...cic/about.html

General surgery residency is competitive but it's not impossible. You need to get very high USMLE scores and get USCE (observership, externship, research) to get LoRs from US doctors.

Thanks for your quick answer.

I've heard about six-year integrated CT Surgery fellowships, which are an alternative to those you mentioned. Do you know anything about them?
