Question Radiology Fellowship without Residency?

Hi,
Wanted to know what are my chances of getting a Radiology Fellowship in Interventional Neuroradiology and also getting a board certification. This what I have done after high school.... I never did a Pre-Med degree.... so I don't know if thats good or bad?

MD/PhD --- Completed in 6 years (PhD in Molecular Biology/Genetics) from Central European University.

MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians) Completed with 2 years of Postgrad training in the UK.

FRCR (Fellowship of Royal College of Radiologists) also completed with 4 years of Radiology Training. (actually in the 4th year now)

Don't have a CCT (certificate of completion of training).... but I don't want to specialise in the UK....so don't really care.... and Really want to specialise from the US in Interventional Neuroradiology .....

USMLE done just recently got Step1 score of 254 and Step2 CK 245....... planning the finish CS in the next 6 months........

Also did some courses form the Open University in the UK, while in training .... did enough part-time modules to get a BA/BSc..... in Mathematics/Physics...... Don't really know if its worth anything i mean its from the Open University, so not sure how much its worth on Paper .... but did gain a lot of valuable knowledge ....

I'm also thinking of Doing a MPhil from Cambridge in Philosophy of Science..... just because I really want to do it... don't know if I will get in.... but time will tell.....

So what do I need to do to get a board certified fellowship from the US ??.... by the way, i'm originally from Pakistan, just got my British passport.
also could I get a H1B sponsorship? and how long will it take to get board certified?

So I logged in to FREIDA ONLINE
and I did the following search:
Vascular and Interventional Radiology with no requirement for prior graduate medical education (i.e no prior US radiology residency) and unfortunately the results did not come up with any program!

See this screenshot:

This means that there's no Interventional Radiology Fellowship that accept candidates without having done Radiology Residency in USA.

But I suggest you log on to FREIDA Online (link above) and do a search without that option and it will list for you all the available programs in US. Contact them one by one and tell them your story and see what they tell you, might be there are exceptions.

As far as H1B Visa for fellowship, is usually difficult, they usually offer only J1-Visa.

Yeah but if you select No Prior Medical or Graduate education for any speciality .... nothing would come up .... i mean every medical specialty requires medical or graduate training and I already have that.... from another country ....

and if you visit ABR (american board of Radiologist) website
http://www.theabr.org/ic/ic_int/ic_int_dr.html
.... they have an alternate pathway of Board certification for IMGs..... but I just wanted to ask people what Programs are out there that comply with that IMG alternate pathway criteria?

Hi
I am MBBS student from India and going for radiology residency in India.
Currently passed my step 1 and preparing for step 2 till my residency starts.
I am planning for fellowship in usa and looking for that alternative pathway as you mentioned?
Is it possible without doing residency in usa?
How to apply?
What score are needed for interventional radilogy?

All I know is that the alternative pathway still means that you have to get a 4 year position at a training program as a fellow or a resident or a faculty member .... I really don't know any details about how this would work.... but the Training Program Director or someone must fill out the form that is shown on the link that I posted from the ABR website..... which is basically stating that the Teaching Faculty would like the candidate to complete training with them for 4 years in whatever capacity .....and then this would enable the ABR to allow you sit the Board Exams in Radio to be certified .....Also 1 of the 4 years can be as a researcher at the faculty ..... but the whole thing must be at one place! and you can't change between teaching programs.

but yes it is possible to do it without a US radiology residency .... I mean that is the whole Idea ..... because I don't really want to sit through the whole residency experience again.... if I have already done it once in another country.... Personally I don't mind doing a 4 year fellowship ...

But Doctors form India might have some other requirements .... I really don't know becuz it specifically mentions something about that on the ABR site.....

but i'm pretty sure no one will give us a H1B visa .... would be lucky to have J1.... becuz I think that the policy of the US about giving out Visas have changed!

The question about how to apply ..... I have no clue!!! Thats why I am here!!

I don't know what kinda scores you need for this pathway, but certainly in Step1 you would need something like 230 or better ....... And I think most people outside the US sitting Step1 do better anyway.... I mean unlike the US students all the Pakistanis I know spend like 1 year after med school just revising for the exams without having to think about going to work/school....its kinda unfair.... but i guess it doesn't really matter anyway.....

Also I think it would be better if you had some sort of research done ....I mean if you are doing a radio residency in India I'm sure you can squeeze in a few extra hours and do a clinical study about something in Radio.....it can't be that hard to do it....and it would be great if you can get it published in an American Journal....

Good Luck!

Thumbs Up The alternate pathway for radiologists

I am a senior radiologist with a ECFMG certificate and Green Card (permanent residency).

What do think my chances are for a fellowship in the USA ?

I am ready to do any fellowship, anywhere.

What would be the best strategy to follow for a successful outcome ?

Thank you in advance.
