Question can IMGs do residency in gynecology?

I've heard from many friends that IMGs cannot apply for residency in Surgery, gynecology and radiology. Later on, I heard that although IMGs can apply in any programme of their choice, they will never get accepted in the above 3 mentioned fields, because these are given almost exclusively to AMGs. Well? Is it true? I would like to do a residency in gynecology, but if it's really true that IMGs aren't accepted there, then I'll have to do a residency in some other country

Hello fat1iscool,

It is absolutely not true that IMGs do not get accepted to surgery, gynecology, and radiology residency programs. According to training statistics reported on Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database Access System (FREIDA), 20.5% of general surgery residents are IMGs, 20.2% of Obstetrics and Gynecology residents are IMGs, and 10% of radiology residents are IMGs. It is apparently not impossible for IMGs to obtain a residency within these specialties, but it is very competitive. Focus on building a competitive overall application for U.S. residency by scoring high on your USMLEs, obtaining residency-relevant experiences to compliment your application and securing the appropriate mentorship and guidance throughout the application process.

Feel free to PM at anytime if you have any other questions, or if you need further guidance.

Good luck!

Emerald

Idea!

Thank you for your encouraging reply. A couple of questions though. What do you mean exactly when you say residency relevant experiences? Do you mean electives in gynecology? Also, which hospitals have a good gynecology programme, and have a high percentage of IMG gynecology residents?

IMGs can be and are being accepted every year to all specialties in the US. There are lists of IMG friendly programs in all specialties. The specialties you mentioned requires high scores and observerships in ACGME certified programs (as well as US LORs). No thing is impossible, it is just the appropiate candidate for the favoured program with some luck!

Hi,

Residency-relevant experiences would be hands-on clinical experiences that are physician supervised, not observerships, where you may have direct interaction with patients and medical personnel and staff within the U.S and as a result become familiarized with the inner workings of U.S. healthcare. You should focus on building a highly competitive application overall, rather than limiting yourself to any lists of hospitals or specific programs that are perceived to accept a large number of IMG candidates. Many candidates within our program have interviewed and Matched within programs that they appeared unqualified for based on scores, graduation date, etc., which further justifies the importance of the overall perception of the residency application, not the individual components.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,
Emerald
