Default How to get experience in the USA as an IMG ?

Hi everyone,

I am an IMG and am currently studying for step 1. I hope to pass step 1, 2CK and 2CS by the end of 2016. I understand the importance of professional experience in the USA in order to find a residency position.

What can/should I do to gain experience in the USA ? I heard about observership, extership ... but I do not really know how this works. Could somebody help me please ?

In a perfect world I would like to apply for the match in 2017 (if I understand it well, interviews should be run in sept/oct 2016). Do you think it's technically possible ?

I am planning on taking (and passing) step 3 by the beginning of 2017. I am lucky and do not have any visa issue.

Thank you for your input.

Externships are one of the best ways for an IMG to gain USCE. You can either go through the medical college or a third party when you want to proceed with an externship program. externships are often a minimum of 4 weeks and if you succeed in them you often receive a Letter of recommendation from the preceptor.

Elective - hands on, for medical students, generally regarded better than externship
Externship - hands on, for medical graduates, harder to find (unless through companies)
Observership - or shadowing a physician, not hands on, for medical graduates, least useful among the three but still helpful to get US lors
