Hello guys, I'm a IMS from Brazil who will hopefully graduate at the end of the year.

Sadly, I started to prepare a little late, but I think I am capable of getting a residency match.

Here is my plan for the year:

1) Do the USMLE step 1 at some point in July (I've already payed for it, so I'm studying nonstop for it). I am confident I can pass, not so confident I can get an above average grade.

2) With my Step 1 results apply for a clerkship somewhere in October-December period. (to earn some US clinical experience) I've read those are the months in which I have the best chances of getting a spot.

I'm not sure if getting some us clinical experience in November will help me much with my application.

3) Do Step 2 CS and CK... (when?)

4) Apply for a residency program in internal medicine. I plan on using this experience to adapt to the US environment and after choose another residency. What do you think about this?

Do you think my strategy is decent ? Absolute crap and I'm not getting a spot? Any suggestions?

Looks decent to me. But try to make sure you score well above average in step 1. Don't delay the exam too much but don't rush it either. Try to score above 1 SD above mean for US grads (that would roughly be around 245-250 as mean for US grads is around 230).
Yeah, the winter season (from September to Feb/March) has good acceptance for international applicants for electives as not a lot of US grads prefer to do electives during these months. Lot of people do theor CS after the rotation so they don't have to go again specifically for cs and the experience kinda helps. Give at least 15-20 days for preparing csafter u are done with the electives.
If you finish cs soon, you would more than ample time to read for ck and apply next september. Also u have to apply for cs well in advance as the dates fill up very fast. Good luck

Thanks. I was thinking about applying this year with only step 1 score. Would that hurt my chances too much ? Also, sounds kind of hard to get interviews done while doing clinical rotations ($$$$ to travel back and forth to the US). So maybe I would only have money to atend few interviews.

Anyone had a similar experience ?

Not a good idea to apply with just step 1. Even US grads rarely do that. Its not possible to match without being ecmfg certified, and even if u score very well in step 1 is impossible for IMGs to even be called for interviews with only step 1. Yea its a costly affair sadly.
