I agree Single name problem

I am from India and have single name say xxx in my passport and academic credentials: Should I go with this for getting USMLE/ECFMG identification number /certification/applying for step 1 with ecfmg ?

OR

should I go for adding family name in my passport (with xxx given name and yyy family name/surname) but retaining my single name xxx in my academic credentials .Will it be right and will work well?

Because somebody told me there are problems in USA with single name

Please guide so that I shall not have problems in future

Regards

Its best if you get a new passport with the surname as well. It will be a huge headache in the future.
Using an example, say my actual name was John Wick but my passport only has John (no surname), it would look something like this,

In passport, first name = john
Last name = *blank*

When u apply for US visa, first name = FNU (first name unknown)
Last name = john (yes this happens happens even if the first name is john in the passport. Esentially if either your given or surname is not available, in the visa first name would appear as FNU)

Now dealing about the name issue with ecfmg is compartively simple. If I update the passport to John Wick, the name I would use with ecfmg record is John Wick. Then I would have to get a letter from my college verifying my name when I submit my degree to ECFMG which has my name as John (stating that the names john wick and john belong to one and the same person).
