Star IMG in need of Financial Aid.

I'm an IMG and I'm in a real need for some kind of financial aid. I live in NYC but know nothing about how to get financial help to pay for USMLE preparation and the STEPS. I'm unemployed at the moment and I'm reviewing for Step 1. Can someone please bare some light?

Banks and financial institutions in USA will not loan the IMG for a simple reason because they are not sure you will match and get a job.

You need to get help from friends and family.

I'm American but studied abroad. I want to concentrate on Step 1 before getting a job. The "course" I'm doing is Med School Tutors. So far it's been great.

Interesting ...
My Picture of that Wonderland is that- once u get visa and get into the country.
Lots of opportunities are there to make money.

I have heard that part time jobs are research assistant jobs are available in USA.
U could study and work side by side..

not quite the case nowadays. im an img too w/ a visa & living in a big metropolis. its been 6mos now & ZERO job(research asst, phlebotomist, med asst) interviews/replies. due to the depression in US, employers want long time employees, as it cost less than keep hiring new ones. they know we are the "come&go" type, so makes it more difficult.
there is one option though & easier - caregiving. but problem is you will def get sued if something happens to the old person & you were studyin, not good for resume if it happens, even DUI is a big big problem for applications. but still you can study, just have to be a man of steel & nerves.

Hey Drmotivation !
I'm in the exact same situation! Just thought I would let you know that you're not alone ! I guess the only thing that remains is to never quit and keep looking for different options.
I'm an IMG and I graduated a month ago, I'm currently trying to save up as much money as possible which involves asking for help from my friends and family. I'm still considering whether I should sacrifice one year and work as a doctor in my home country and save up money that way, but all I can think of is getting a residency in the USA and the sooner I start the prep the better! The financial aspect of it is tough but it's going to be worth it!
Good luck!

Find how much is residency salary here
Take home salary in Residency?

People spend in $100Ks not because of the residency salary, because of what you will get after residency

if you got into residency, then all your expenses will be paid off and with a decent amount left to take back home.
how much is 9 lakh rupee converted to US dollars?

thats a pretty good amount, u need at least 10k to start with when your planning for US residency. and btw its a gamble. having a big amount doesnt guarantee that an img will get match.

i cant tell you how much, as cost of living varies from each state. but i guarantee you, you will have much at the end if you live frugally.

some programs have housing, majority don't. cost of living is high in NY, CA & some other states i dont know.

but the main issue is getting a match. salary is out of the picture or would be the last thing on an imgs mind.

I am searching for electives in US in jan months...Is it difficult to get..
Paid electives are very costly...
What i came to know from net is that..Electives are given for AMG only 4 yr students enrolled in US Medical school..

Is it easy to get Electives for IMG after reaching there ?
