Default Extending MBBS graduation for preparing for USMLE and doing clinical clerkship

Hi,

I am an International Medical student In India and am applying for residency in US. To strengthen my application, I am planning to do a 3 months clerkship in US. Most of the clerkships offered are to students. So, I am planning to extend my graduation date fro July 2016 to May 2017. I am planning to take time off to prepare for step 2 ck and complete 3 months of clerkship in US during this time. Does anyone think extending graduation date by 10 months is a bad idea?

Thanks!

Everyone does it. Almost everyone going for usmle in my school have delayed their grad by at least 1-2 years. No big of a deal.

Thanks for your reply. It helps. Do you know if MCI has any duration by which internship should be completed?

Apparently its 2 years since passing the final year (u get a year extra to finish the internship). But I have never heard anyone to even extended the internship by more than 2 yrs getting into any trouble with MCI.

Makes sense. I was asking because I completed my final year in July 2015 and by July 2016 I will have 1.5 months of internship left which I am planning to complete by April 2017 after taking 3 months of USCE.

You should be fine. One of my friend passed his final MBBS in March 2014, started internship in March 2014 and still has not completed internship. He will come back from electives and finish his internship in July 2016. Another one started internship in 2013 and finished in 2015. The point is, everyone does it.
