Certificate MSPE for International Medical Graduates

I'd be really grateful if someone could enlighten about the following:

1) Are MSPE and the Dean's letter the same thing?
2) I've read that the ECFMG generates the Dean's letter for IMGs. Does that mean I do not have to worry about the MSPE as the ECFMG will autogenerate one based on my transcripts and send to ERAs? Or my University Dean will have to send one which the ECFMG will forward?
3) What gets and doesn't get mentioned in the MSPE/Dean's letter? I am doing MBBS and our main examinations are three 'professional exams', dealing with pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects respectively. So, for me, will the MSPE contain elaborate details of my performance in each subject or that I passed each of them on nth try or just the fact that I cleared all my exams? Will class rank be included in it?
4) If the MSPE is elaborate, what details in it will be scrutinized by the residency programs and what 'facts' would be considered appealing/outstanding?
5) What bearing does an IMG's MSPE have on his/her chances at securing a residency/interview? Is it really important or, for an IMG, just a document you have to submit?

The reason I'm asking these questions is that my performance in my med school exams are not what you would call 'outstanding'; they're above average but not the likes of a class topper's one. And I just wanted to know whether it would affect my chances at residency.

Any input is highly appreciated.

The MSPE and the Dean Letter are the same. It's just that the ECFMG recently requested that IMGs provide MSPE not Dean Letter (they just changed the name).

It does not have to be detailed, one or two pages is enough. If you want it detailed then look for MSPE template here
Dean Letter and MSPE Template

It does not have a great impact on the matching. Much more important is the USMLE Scores. This is in the case of IMGs of course, for AMGs it's very important.

Also please click on the MSPE- tag link at the bottom of this thread and read the relevant threads you'll gain lots of insights about it.

Thanks a bunch Sabio!

So you're telling me that I just need to pass my med school exams but ace the steps right? Why I'm asking again is because I gave a disastrous Microbiology exam (an exam that gets mentioned on my transcript) and I'll probably just scrape a pass or there are chances of having to repeat So, as an IMG, I'm hoping it'll probably not have much impact on my residency application?

Yep. Currently it does not have much impact.

However, in the upcoming years, maybe 2-3 years, Program Directors might start looking at the IMG's MSPE as it's becoming more and more standard with IMGs. But for now, this year match, it does not have much impact, specially when the USMLE scores are high, they believe in USMLE scores more than overseas med school assessments!

Sabio, I can't thank you enough for patiently replying to the posts.

Just another question, if you be kind enough again - what exactly is the 'transcript' that people talk about? As far as I know its the summary of my academic records during med school in one paper. Do the marks and other details that get mentioned there have an impact?

In short, to summarise it in one question, which details about my performance at medical school carry weight on the residency application?

Same answer is for the MSPE.

The final medical school transcript does not have really that much of an impact when compared to USMLE Scores.

Probably the transcript is more important than MSPE but still not a huge impact on matching chances.

Default Can I change the standard MSPE format that my medical school makes?

Hi,

so the MSPE that my medical school issues is nothing more than one page summary of my marks and then join and end date. more than half of the page is about the college itself.

I want to alter the MSPE and include other standard things that MSPE states i.e. unique qualities, details of core clerkships, some recommendation by my dean.
I am in the position that I can make my own 'better' MSPE(of course, nothing that is not true but just a better description of my achievements and scores) which will be different from the below average MSPE that my college issues, and then get that signed from my dean.
Is this the right thing to do?
OR does every college have a set format which ECFMG knows and changing it counts as a discrepancy?

Please I will be thankful if anyone could answer this.

hello im99,

As far as I know, the ECFMG only has a sample of the signature of your med school official authorized to verify your documents. So I guess its alright if you get your MSPE in a better and standard format and get it signed by the authorized official. I'm not completely sure though. But I think its not going to matter that much as Sabio already mentioned.

What about the programs that require the deans letter or MSPE? are they addressing just to AMG or both AMG and IMG? if thats the case and an IMG doesn't have those papers they will reject their application?

Every program will require the MSPE. Otherwise the application isn't considered "complete", so it might not even get looked at.

Romania MSPE

Hello guys

I have a question. I'll be able to upload my MSPE only on september 15. As far as I understood I can not make any changes on my ERAS application after submitting it. So if I submit my ERAS application, will ECFMG be able to add MSPE to MyERAS application later even if I have submitted MyERAS? May I submit my ERAS application and apply to programs on September 15 even if my MSPE is not processed by ECFMG yet? Will ECFMG release it to programs automatically on October 1?
