Program Directors Chat with a Program Director about IMGs!

Nothing exceptional .... All of us knows everything .... But he was really nice and talked very frankly about what i asked ..... Few points ...
1. Year of graduation is really important ....
2. He knows externship is really tough to get in USA for IMGs ..... But he would like to have a candidate who have externship experience ...
3. Apply multiple specialties and all around USA .
4. I think nowadays getting score below 99 is a little bit bad !!!
5. I really liked it what he told about Step 3 ... He said .. STEP 3 IS A double bladed sword (something like that, what he told was funny ) ..... If u take step 3 before ERAS application .... and If u get above 90 ... its very good ... But below 90 would be a problem ..... So he advised me to take it, when I think .. I am fully prepared .....
6. MOST INTERESTINGLY : He said ... for IMG's they count step 2 CK score more than step 1 .... because step 1 is basic not that much related to clinical side .... but CK score predict how successful you would be as a resident as it predicts your clinical knowledge and judgment ...

Default Your PD is wrong!

I think that's his personal opinion about the CK more important than Step 1. Or maybe he doesn't know how things are going on in other programs.

PDs assess your clinical capacity from the CS not the CK, because the CK is again a written exam and all of IMGs and AMGs read the same books and go do it. But it's the CS that tells whether an IMG can really deal with US patients.

Step 1 Score is much more important than the CK for simple reason, (ERAS Filter), when you apply in ERAS they will filter you out if your Step 1 score is low because they don't have the CK scores for AMGs. This has been explained by Step Taker here
Why USMLE Step 1 Score is more important than USMLE Step 2 Score

I agree with him about all the other points.

Default You got me wrong

Definitely step taker knows a lot about these processes what he told i agree.....
But .... Every program have their own requirements .....

1. If you search every programs requirement , you will see that ... they mentioned if you are IMG .... You need these things before you apply , like you have to be ECFMG certified or pass all exam in 1st attempt or require 85 at least in both step or YOG in 3/5 years .... They can filter out IMGs through lots of things ..... it doesnt mean you will be filter out only on the basis of step 1 ...

2. AND ... He told they have got 6000 applications for 40 position last year ..... So i think he knows a lot .....

3. Comparing IMG's with AMG's on the basis of score kinda impossible .... AMG matches 94 % where IMGs 42 % with almost same or even high scores .....

4. YOU GOT ME WRONG ...That PD , did not tell me , they filter out on the basis of step 2 CK score .... But he like some one who got high score in step 2 CK then step 1 .....

5. CS is all about approach a patient , you don need lots of knowledge to pass it , In CS you don have any treatment option ..... But CK is all about how much knowledge about a disease you have and what next best step you will do ..... There are lots of cases where TREATMENT is the next best step ....

I did not say it's the only criteria. I said it's the only way to compare you to AMGs, because AMGs apply without CK scores.

That's another strong proof that they must have used an automated filter. No residency program in the world has the capacity to review 6,000 application, therefore they must put the filter and Step 1 score is the biggest filter.

That's correct for programs that take AMGs only. But if a program takes both AMGs and IMGs then in that case they have to compare them and they use Step 1 Score for that.

Exactly, PDs would like to make sure you have the approach, they don't care about the knowledge.
Many IMGs are super genius and great exam takers but when it comes to dealing with American patients they stumble because of different culture and different style and different language.
I know many many IMGs who have got 240+ in Step 1 and CK yet they failed the CS.
I have been rotating in several residency programs, all of them stressed the critical significance of passing CS from the first time.
Go back and ask your PD and ask him the following:
Whom do you prefer
Candidate A, CK score 99 and CS second attempt
Candidate B, CK score 80 and CS first attempt
Am sure he'll pick candidate B

I see you dont like step 2 CK ..... lolzzz ..... Let me clarify a little bit
1. Attempts are bad ... doesnt matter step 1 , Ck or Cs ...

2. If they require 1st attempt ... does not matter what is the score in step 1 you will be filtered out , even you get 99 .....

3. AMG and IMG cant be compared ... AMG can match with step 1 , for IMG that is a dream to match with step 1 , even with 99 ( 260 ) ....

4. I don think i need to go to him .... becoz he clearly told me that , i didnt even asked him which score is imp .... For Him ... high step 1 , followed by low step 2 is little bad .... but low step 1 followed by high step 2 is better than 1st one ..... Lots of program even thats PD program require 1ST ATTEMPT IN ALL STEP .... DIDNT HAVE ANY MIN. SCORE REQUIREMENTS ....

5. I NEVER TOLD STEP 1 IS LESS IMP .... But that doesnt mean , your step 2 CK IS LESS IMP ....

6. MUCH MORE IMP THING IS ..... LOTS OF LUCK AND JUST PRAY A LOT , GET SOME CONNECTION AND GET YOURSELF IN A RESIDENCY PROGRAM ... LOLZZZ
