Idea! Foreign Equivalent Surgical Residency!

Hi..

I'm an IMG from India. I have finished by MBBS in 2008 and will be finishing my MS in general surgery soon. I was looking for Fellowships in sub specialty surgery, eg: Transplant Surgery, Minimal Access Surgery etc.

Although there are a few programs which accept Foreign nationals for such programs, they say "Candidates must have completed an accredited general surgical residency or its foreign equivalent prior to beginning the fellowship."

So how can I know if my degree (MS General Surgery) is equivalent to US Residency????

Thanx in advance

Contact the programs one by one.

Every program has its own regulations and criteria specially in the case of subspecialty surgery fellowships.

Star Thank you :)

Thank you Sabio...

Just a few more doubts..

1. How difficult is it to get an ophthalmology fellowship?? ( For my wife who has done MS ophthalmology)
2. Is prior USCE required??
3. How easy/ Difficult is it to get Residency after fellowship?
4. Can I apply for both residency/ fellowship?? And If i get residency in midway of fellowship what to do??

Thank you so much... I have been to many USMLE discussion sites, but This is by far the BEST

It's not easy but it's easier than those who apply directly to residency because by that time you'd have connections and USCE.

Yes you can apply at the same time but once you get a fellowship (sign contract) you cannot leave them even if you get residency.

Correct Answer Thank you :)

Dear Sabio,

Thank you for the info... I went through all the links and cleared my confusion.

I have one more question (If you dont mind )

If I apply to surgical residency, Since I have already finished my MS(General Surgery) here in India (which is 3 years), I will be applying 3 years after my graduation. I heard that many residency programs have a cut off of 3 years and I wont be considered. Is it so?

Can you please tell me the advantage/ Disadvantages of applying for residency after Post-graduation???

Thanks a lot

The cut off of three years has been set to make sure that applicants are not away from clinical practice for long time, since your are continuing your master degree then I don't think you'll have problems.

The advantage of applying before overseas postgrad is saving time and avoidance of wasting time.
