Default Maximum 3 Month USCE Rule for NY Residency

So I am in the final year of MBBS, already gave step 1, so was looking into visiting clerkships/externships lately so I could do them next year.

From a colleague I heard that You cannot do More than 3 months of clerkships/externships outside your home institution to be eligible to apply for any residency spot in the State of New York.

Is this true? I am worried because I was planning on doing at least 4 from good places in order to supplement my app well. I don't want to limit my options in anyway and New York does have a fair amount of residency spots.

If it is true, how would they ever confirm/know if you have done more than 3?

Hi Kryzstof - since most of our rotations are based in NYC, we often have to clarify this situation to our students

Are you currently attempting to gain medical school credit for your NY-based clerkships/electives? That's the only time the NYSED clerkship rule applies.

Also, if your school is on the list of approved schools below, there is no restriction either on the amount of clerkships for credit you can complete in the state of NY:

- American University of Antigua, Antigua
- American University of the Caribbean, St. Martin, Netherland Antilles
- The Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Mexico
- English Language Program, University of Debrecen, Medical and Health Science Center, Medical School, Debrecen, Hungary
- English Language Program, Medical University of Lublin, Lublin, Poland
- English Language Program, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland
- Fatima College of Medicine, Manila, Philippines
- International Health and Medicine Program, Ben Gurion University of the Negrev, Beer-Sheva, Israel
- Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India
- Medical University of the Americas/Nevis, Nevis, West Indies
- Ross University School of Medicine, Roseau, Dominica
- Saba University School of Medicine, Saba, Netherland Antilles
- St. George’s University School of Medicine, St. George’s, Grenada
- St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

You can read more about the rule on our blog:
