Do you think since it's already late in the game that it will make a difference getting my step 2 ck results back first week of November as opposed to the last week of November? Thanks for any input!
From what I know, as long as your score gets in before the Rank order list is due sometime in Feb, it's ok. Some programs even say that they require you to be ecfmg certified at time of beginning residency instead of at time of applications.....
Of course for IMGs it's always better to apply w/ complete app including all scores. But I know people who interviewed last year w/o all exams.

Haha!

I really don't know how long we have to wait.

People say Psych IVs for IMGs are sent out pretty late.

Any opinions or news you guys might wanna share?

Default last nov

when I was rotating in a hospital in NY last November, a couple of IMG/FMG applying for psych still hadn't heard back from any psych programs. I'm guessing unless you're a stellar applicant or AMG then we usually don't hear back until later in the season (I hope)!

Point.

Has anyone else gotten any interviews, rejections, or acknowledgements?

I've received only one acknowledgement from University of Wisconsin. No rejections and certainly no interviews.

I am very worried.

Got my first IV!

CAMC West Virginia IM/Psych!!

Scheduled my date for 19th Novemebr.

Any idea what the program is like?

Its a difficult one coz it has only 2 positions...but, is it IMG friendly?

Would appreciate some feedback!!

Congrats, I heard its a laid back program I wouldn't bet on a combined residency to be so, the city morgantown is very small country side a bit boring but the good thing is its 3 hours far from DC and 2 from pittsburgh, I have friends there. one of the comments on the program from what I read described it very lowkey.

Good Luck

Congratulations.
Morgantown is a nice place. Pittsburgh is like an hour and 10 minutes away. Heard that LCME grads are given first preference in WVU but they do have IMGs, some middle eastern countries also sponsor residents from their country in the program.
Its a good opportunity. Game face on. All the best.

Just wanted to make a correction. The more familiar name of the program is Texas Tech University (Lubbock) program. Let me know if anybody can throw some light on the program.

Congrats on your interview megahigh. I haven't been able to confirm the date yet. I haven't checked out their website thoroughly. What seems missing there?

I agree with you on Bronx Lebanon. It is not a good program. But Henry Ford is a very good program. Many congratulations.

Help

Congratulations to all those who received IVs ! Best of Luck for the rest.

I have been a silent viewer of this forum but couldn't resist anymore

I am an IMG and applied exclusively for Psych this year.

My credentials:
231(1), 242(1), CS pass(1), 229(1)
2months externship, YOG 2004 (Non-psych clinical experience home country)
Require visa.

I got one IV from Texas Tech (Lubbock) about 2 weeks ago and 2 acknowledgements. Haven't heard anything else for the last 10 days (and that is killing me ).
I wanted to email programs just to follow up on my app. but not exactly sure how to put it down in the email. Any input will be appreciated.

congrats on your interviews guys , hope you all match.
I am frustrated, 214/219/cs all first attempt ,don't need visa, 7 month USCE in inpatient\outpatient\community hospital setting and ongoing .
I didn't get any IV
I don't know what to say or do, every day is silent inbox except for 3 rejections.
I am starting to lose hope

Default Don't Lose Hope!

I know it's easier to say then do but try not to worry that much. How many programs did you end up applying to? Keep in mind most programs won't send out interviews till mid to late October so you still have some time to get some which will probably come in waves! Keep your head up, you'll make it through this.

I actually got a phone call from a program asking me if I was not participating on the NRMP match since I had not checkmarked the box. That was almost a week ago. So I registered on NRMP and put my ID in the ERAS application so that it would update accordingly. After that I made a generic type email and sent it to each program I applied to individually apologizing for the error and giving them my ID. Probably a quarter of them replied back thanking me and saying they'd look through the application. Good Luck!

So far 1 interview from LSU

what do you guys think....I havent heard anything since then.....
How is everyone preparing for interview? any books you would recommend?
Thanks for your input.
The only thing that's hurting you is the all general LOR.

That said, your application is overall match-able.

It's understandable. I contacted on of the programs I applied to regarding my application status. Here is a part of the email I recieved:

We know it is difficult to do so, but we ask that you wait to hear from us. This year, problems within the ERAS system have caused further delays. We will be contacting applicants on a rolling basis.
It's seems all programs have been having technical difficulties. So just be patient. Things will happen.

Yeah, the information should be in the email they sent you. Apparently, it's a 3 1/2 hour test with MCQs and an essay at the end and they interview like 32 people out of 150 who score high enough. I'm only going because I live relatively close by.

I doubt I'll be attending because I live too far away. And i doubt I'll score well on the exam, because others would have studied their butts off. I can do well in an interview.

From what I hear, the applicants with the most favorable Board exam scores are invited to take a test at Jamaica. The top 10% scorers were interviewed and ranked. The others were not. The exam is 60% psychiatry, 40% Neurology and IM.

Hello fellow colleagues, I am very concerned as I have not received any Psych IVs as of now. I applied to over 120 Psych programs. My credentials are as follows: 228/240/1st attempt pass/2010 grad/US Citizen/2 years USCE Psych

Someone please enlighten me on what to do as my dream of becoming a psychiatrist seem dimmer by the minute

The is how I structured my emails...

Dear Dr. [Program Director's Name],

-2 sentence introduction/expression of interest.

- 2 sentences about what you have been doing since submitting your application.

- 2 sentences thinly veiled request for an IV.

You have to treat the e-mail like a mini personal statement. Make sure the grammar and spelling of the e-mail is picture perfect.

Your signature should include a phone number and an AAMC number.

You can if you want to. I didn't because I applied to a lot of programs and individually addressing each program coordinator can get cumbersome. The email will be added to your file regardless of who you're addressing.

If you want to cover all your bases, you can address "Dear Dr. [PD] and the admission committee,"

I applied to Mayo, but no news so far. I'm not sure about the competitiveness, but I know there are IMG's. Maybe the less desirable location of the program might make it easier? I hear you have to wear a suit there everyday!

wow - that's a good credential. i don't understand why you aren't getting an interview. CS? LORs? from whom? 2 years USCE are recent? were they done under observership or actual clinical setting?

sorry for questions - just trying to see a picture here

Hi Mega,

I passed CS on first attempt, 3 LOR from US psychiatrists all observerships. The usce are my most recent experiences. Im assuming psych has just become extremely competitive..... What should I do?

I would say give this week a chance. this week and next are supposed to be when IVs are most active... at least for IMGs.

Beginning next week (especially after end of week), however, if you still do not hear much in terms of IVs, I would probably follow FriendlyIMG's suggestion and start sending some emails away to PDs.

If you think that psychiatry is an easy pass to get in or a good backup , I am sorry my friend you got it all wrong, I truly believe psych is harder than IM.

Default yes psych is difficult too!!

I just wanted to respond since I was slightly irritated at my other friends who are applying to the match this year. So yes, most of them ARE applying to IM, and I'm one of the few applying to psych, but they all say I should have no problem getting into psych because "no one else wants to". What a load of BS. There are 6000+ spots for IM in the country. There are 1000+ spots for Psychiatry. Yes, there may be less people applying for psych, but there are also wayyyy fewer spots. AND TO ADD that many many applicants apply to psych as a backup in addition to their desired specialty, even though they don't really want it and take spots from people who are truly interested just irks me. Okay, RANT OVER! Haha.

I totally agree with roidz and yazz, I have applied to over 130 Psych programs, and truly want to become a psychiatrist. I have not received any IV as of yet and am starting to lose hope of my dream . May God look over us all who are together in this path to help those unfortunately suffering from mental illness.

because of your past experience and cv in only path, no one would believe you if you said psychiatry was ever your choice. if you want to choose psych, you would need to have an actual clinical experience (or more) in that area and prove to psych attending that you are interested, otherwise, you will never get an IV from psych.

yes... or if you can find a way to also combine path which you already have an experience in along with psychiatry, that would be a great combination as well.

you just need to make sure that your story is credible and makes sense from the eyes of program directors who would be seeing your application.

Well my friend I am no expert nor I would consider it my niche, choosing your career is a harsh task if you're neutral, without a passionate goal, and not knowing what it takes. but at the bright side and not to sound somber, you only have told us half of your story, you never mentioned your CK or CS?

Doing psychiatry is great, knowing what it takes to be one is the secret, the whole field is about communication, fluency or maybe the need to be eloquent with the most intellectuals, a promising research future ( read Dr Insel's work) there is a transforming or reforming of the field going on which in my opinion is crucial for its existence for the upcoming years, all of that and more is going on here, so cut it short going to this field is not just a late afternoon walk or picnic next to the potomac, it needs a solid firm passion, go and ruminate, ponder and think then decide.

Help Jamaica test

Hi all,

I am travelling to New York next week to take the Jamaica test. Will be staying one night, Thursday night, does anyone know any good, economical and safe place to stay nearby ? And do any of you want to share accommodation(male, light sleeper, might snore depending on humidity) ?

Thanks

Good luck, I can't comprehend this hospital, whats the idea of such exam? its like they are not confident enough or not relying solely on USMLE.

I don't know, but I am not in the situation to turn down an opportunity offered to me however low the chances of me making it might be. I am going to quote Wayne Gretzky here, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

Exactly. Never give up guys and gals. There are always AMGs cancelling for whatever reason. The season doesn't end until JANUARY!

Default My status

Hi guys. First time I am posting here. Its nice to see the encouraging and positive approach exuded by you all.

I have one 1 IV so far. Maimonidis, NY
About 8 Rejections so far. (3 due to no visa sponsoring programs in which I applied by mistake)

Step 1: 245
Step 2: 238
CS: Pass (2 attempts)
FMG, YOG 2011
Need J1

Hoping to receive more IV in coming weeks IA, despite the sluggish trend so far.

Hi everyone. I got this from a program that gave me an interview for transitional. Has anyone had any experience with this?

"You will be meeting with Dr. ..........., our program director. Dr. ...........prefers to use a panel discussion format. Since we already know a great deal about your medical training, topics for discussion may be politics, current events, or global climate change (just to name a few). There is no way you can prepare for this discussion, so please be yourself and don't be nervous."

I am really tense about the interview as I had never had any experience.
I was wondering if anyone can guide me through with link to videos or pdf for interview preparation.

That's actually really interesting. Which program is this ? I would just read the news everyday, watch some news channels and probably read up on recent events.

Panel interviews are a tricky, they tend to mix interviewees together and rate them once, the issue with it is if you are an introvert you will have some hardships in participating in it, some tips act if you got bitemporal heminopia ignore them (the other interviewee's) , don't over think their answers even though they might seem to at as a smart answers but in the real fact its just new to you, if you know the subject prepare well dont go into much details just have a big picture back in your head. good luck
