Psyche Season Greetings

Hi everyone.

Happy Holidays. Hope everyone is good.

I have only 4 interview invitations so far this season. All came in early in November. I hadn't heard back from any other program after that, so, I decided to contact them which happened about 2 weeks ago, I regret not contacting them earlier. Some of them got back to me saying all their slots are full and they will contact me if something does come up . Got a lot of rejections after I sent out emails to the programs I haven't heard back from . Wish I had sent out those e mails earlier.

Thanks.

Good question, andywarhol.

I always had the magic number 7 in my mind, that is where I'd feel (somewhat) relaxed in terms of the match

According to the annual NRMP report having 10-12 makes the probability of matching almost 90%

Default Prematch ?

I have heard that Elmhurst has started giving out prematches (authentic news). Has anyone interviewed there and got a prematch on this forum ?

Default Second look

Is second look something that the programs invite us for ? or is it something we as applicants can request of them ?

What I know about second looks is what I encountered on one of my interviews when I asked them how would an applicant know if the program is seriously interested in them and they would rank them high? one of the responses were that previously they had the second look system were the program sends out a list of offers for a second look to a certain number of applicants whom are by selection the most highly ranked on the programs list, according to them they stopped using such thing due to the possibility of bias.

PLEASE don't generalise what I stated simply it seems a unique thing for that specific program.
The following is from the Match communication code:
Discouraging unnecessary post-interview communication Program directors shall not solicit or require post-interview communication from applicants, nor shall program directors engage in post-interview communication that is disingenuous for the purpose of influencing applicants’ ranking preferences.

I heard VCU was nice, but you might work a bit harder than other programs. I'd def check it out, especially being an IMG.

Hello. A friend of mine is a US IMG with an attempt at Step 1. Average scores overall and USCE in psych. What are her chances in Psych? Any input would be appreciated.

It's quite difficult to predict your friend's chances. An attempt on step 1 will def make it tougher as some programs require passing all the boards on the first attempt. But there are so many other factors that will also be into play like where the USCE were, the authors and quality of the LOR and psych LORs, YOG, research, pubs, PS, etc. I'd recommend taking step 3 before applying and doing observerships/electives where they offer residency for IMG's.

should you do research?
Hmm, research will help you in multiple aspects:
1- it will show much on your CV as a person of genuine interest (which is a big deal in psych)
2- give you great opportunity to network and be in contact with people of interest.
3- gain LOR.
4- get exposed to the US system.
5- get published and perhaps get your self a presentation on one of the national conferences.
6-gain much weight as an applicant of different experience which is highly attractive for institutes that give research its main value.
so should you do research or not is all up to you.

University at Buffalo!
Thanks for the reply. I liked SUNY a lot but the interviewers felt a little pushy to me. They have great research opportunities plus work with the underserved which is my thing!

Totally get what you're talking about, I felt the same way they asked me a lot of questions about my family and hows my relationship with them is like which I felt it wasn't appropriate for a job interview, but other than that the program truly impressed me with the research they got, especially when they focus on making all their residents experience being a reviewer for a certain given journal.

Upon your list, I would focus on university based vs community, Location is a plus, nevertheless fellowship opportunity is as important also with that being said. this is how Id rank it.
4) IOL Hartford, Ct( IDK much about it)
1)SUNY downstate
2)UB
5)Hennepin
3)Metro Health if Im correct this is a new program part of case western .

Is everyone 100% confident with their ROL?

I'm still debating on whether to rank University at Buffalo or Wayne State University higher. To me, there were a good amount of similarities between the programs.
Any thoughts?

I think University at Buffalo has a great program. I guess it would depend on any family ties or weather preferences? I don't know much about Wayne program.

I matched at SUNY Buffalo!

So so happy and excited. I loved the program, don't mind the weather (it's like back home) and my husband is happy about moving there too.
Curious to read where everybody matched!

Default Congratulations to everyone that matched!

I have been following this thread since its inception and have had the opportunity to silently watch as everyone progressed in their journey to its conclusion. Once again congratulations to those who matched and to those who did not should still be proud of the fact that they have come this far in this journey. We all have different journeys in life and I truly feel giving up should never be an option. I wish you all the best of luck with your respective paths in life. I am an US IMG, graduated in Dec 2013. I will be giving Step 1 in July this year and intend on applying for the Match of 2017. I have one month USCE(Not in psychiatry). I would really appreciate it if everyone that was a part of this thread could take a couple of minutes to write about what theY learnt through out the application process. What advice they would have liked to receive before they had applied and what in their opinion makes an IMG competitive to match into Psychiatry. It would be great if you could share your thoughts on the subject. This thread has been a source of motivation for the last couple of months and has given me good perspective into what I should expect in the future. I am sure there will be others who will benefit from your wisdom.Thank you. Have a great one guys and great luck .

Hello everyone, hope all are well! I'm really glad to read that a lot of you have matched. Happy for you as well as encouraging for me as I applied this year for psych.

I was wondering if you guys who matched could please share your information, if you don't mind. Could you please let us who are applying this year, your:

1. stats
2. where you ended up getting interview invites
3. Where you guys matched?

Thanks for your time!
