Not too much. Got the token and working on my personal statement, and trying to get in touch with all my LOR authors. How bout you?

Btw, did you notice that some psych programs that are grayed out (indicating that they're not participating in the match) have websites saying they are participating in the match and apps can only be processed through ERAS?!

whats your plan on the personal statement? are you going to specify a personal statement for a certain program , cause some programs do require that.
yea non participating programs happens every year ,I believe it needs to be contacted directly to apply to them.

I wasn't aware of that. I thought the option of specifying a personal statement for certain programs was for applicants that are applying to multiple specialties?

some programs like harvard south shore require a specific personal statement about why do you think that harvard south shore suits you

Welcome to the coolest club, thank god a lot of candidates stigmatize psychiatry and they don't know what are they missing.

How about your LORs .. Where do u have the clinical experience in psychiatry? Is it true that for psychiatry we need at least 6 months of clinical experience?..

in the past year literally I have read most of the 190 programs web pages except for those who dont have one such as delaware. it varies from a program to another, some require Hand on experience and nothing less , some are enough with clerkships or observeships , some like Cleveland clinic consider research experience as equivalent of clinical experience , some such as alabama and phenix require 6 months , other which is rare require 2 years imagine 2 years of hand on experience

Default new to this forum....psychiatry applicant

Hi everyone,
Hope all is well. Im an IMG graduated in 1997 and was very active pediatrician till I moved to the states. I have very strong interest in psychiatry.
Step1 201 step 2 228 both first time, cs passed 2nd time, and cs 194 first time.
I have done master degree in public health, have 2 poster presentations, preparing 2manuscripts to be submitted soon for publication. 2 letters of recommendations from psychiatrists, and another one from a principle investigator working on adolescents depression study.

I understand that being graduated in 97 is a big issue but, I hope that my genuine interest in psychiatry and my cv and personal statement will be good to get some interviews.

looking forward to read other applicants stories and collaborate with all of you.
thx!

Thanks yazz. Im learning how to use this forum lol.
One of them was in the college of medicine reasearch forum 2013 . The other one was during the graduation poster presentation ( I also did some fellowship in an interdisciplinary program related to neurodevelopmental disability).
Both posters are related to mental health and psychiatry!

Yazz,
First,I enlisted all the main points I want to talk about then I started to expand on each point.
I started the PS with a quota that is unique to my case and the first paragraph was a general description of why Im changing my specialty from pediatrics to psychiatry.
Then the second paragraph is a glimpse of how a hard worker I was /am as a physician.
The third paragraph I talked about my accomplishment here in the states not just academic but also some community volunteer activities related to helping people with mental health.

The conclusion was short and sweet paragraph of what I want from psych residency program and how this can help me to gear for future career etc.

Hey all. I'm a USIMG from a non-Caribbean school in southeast asia and will be applying exclusively for psych. Felt that talking to patients was more my forte than telling them what to do haha. Anyways here are my creds:

Step 1 - 229
Step 2 CK - 217
Step 2 CS - pass 1st attempt
Volunteering at a Psychiatric research facility
LORS - Decent LORs with 1 good Psych LOR
Publication - 1 psych publication as 1st author
YOG - 2013

So let's hope for the best for each other! God knows this world needs more psychiatrists =)

Interesting, I got 5 submitted manuscripts, 1 accepted yet not published so, I really believe having publication makes your app glow in the dark

Someone tell me if I'm wrong, but in the case of publications, I believe that if it isn't accepted, you can't place that manuscript in the publication section, although you can mention the submissions in your CV as part of your research section. Either way, having your step 3 goes a long way, and just doing research is very helpful. I'd be surprise if you don't match let alone get interviews considering your CV. Good luck to you.

If you think you have done any community volunteer job to help people with psychiatric issues or help decreasing the stigma associated with mental health disorders that will flavor your resume.

Any input? Any experience?

I think it will. Any sort of social/community work is appreciated in the US. If it is specialized Psych-oriented social work then its even better. You should include it in your application, in my opinion.

Thank you, anshulpandey7790. I was trying to think about these extra curricular activities and looking back to my community activities, infact I have many things done which were all dedicated to supporting people with mental health disabilities directly or indirectly.

So yeh, this may be another venu to boost the application

I know the feeling...it's almost like waiting for your step score to be released. I can't wait for interview season already! Few more weeks! Soon we'll be posting interviews

Correction, someone informed me that you can list submissions in "peer reviewed journal articles (other than published)". There's also a good thread in SDN called ERAS 'Publications' Listing FAQ if anyone else has any other publication questions.

Default Me too!

I'm applying too for psych too!!

US IMG (did med school in India)

Scores:
Step 1 :227
Step 2: 241 (just got it today!)
CS: Passed
3 months clinical experience (observerships) and doing one now so I guess 4
YOG: 2013

I have a question, so i've talked to a Psych Program Director here in my town and they said that just getting above a certain score is good enough. But what about top programs? Do they consider better scored candidates?

Congrats on CK!! I've only seen a few programs with higher score requirements; like Case Western requires a 90 and Wayne State requires 220. I know people that have matched into top psych programs with below average scores, but had exceptional research, publications, and LORs. I believe for psych they look at the entire application, and prefer relevant experience and genuine interest. But, I'm sure higher scores will look great.

Hi icodon unfortunately I have no experience in such a service before. In fact this is the first time I hear there is such a thing.
In general the author introduce him/herself officially , then tells how he/she knows you and since when, then some description of your English ability, your interpersonal skills, and organizational skills. Sure he should describe your experience with him such as ---Dr. iCodone worked with me in this ....clinic (or any place)and he was doing so and so. The better the author knows you , the better the letter will be.Sure he/she should mention your genuine interest in psychiatry even if you worked with him in another department.

This is just a summary of what the LOR may contain.Hope it will help you.

Best,

Listening Any chances?

Hello folks,

I have no USCE in psych but I am really genuinely interested in pursuing this field. Especially after recent changing circumstances around me in last couple months.

My stats are
step 1: 199
ck: 206
cs: pass
step 3: just gave last week awaiting results
ALL in first attempt.
Green card. YOG 2011. Research exp but not in psych..

What are my chances are? please give honest advice..(being blunt is fine)
Thanks so much.

It depends...YOG? Do you need a Visa or are you a US Citizen? Any psych experience (research, publications, residency, etc.) in your country?

Not needing a visa and having step 3 will be a great advantage. However, not having USCE might make it difficult. I encourage you to apply still, and I hope you should be able to get some interviews. And try to secure an observership or externship in psych. Good luck!

You have very good chance if you know how to present yourself and your accomplishment. Your homework now is to:
1- Write an excellent personal statement expressing your genuine interest in psychiatry.
2- Please please please do your best to have a very near future USCE in psychiatry.

And from now on set your mind that you will be a psychiatrist! ok?

Default Opinion regarding PS.

Hey, guys.
Needed your opinion regarding a Psych PS.

I have made an almost final copy of my PS. The only problem is that its really long. Its coming to about 1200 words.

All the forums usually say that we should keep the PS within 1000 words. But, some places they mentioned that Psych PS's can be a little longer, as Psych PDs usually don't mind reading a little more as the PS is supposed to be interesting, and obviously, personal.

My confusion is that there are parts in my PS I don't want to edit out. This draft seems pretty tight to me. Even though its 1200 words.

What would you guys suggest? What about your PS's?

Hello,
If you know someone with very good English writing like a PhD student you can ask him to edit it for you and squeeze it for you with the same themes stay intact. I'm saying that from a personal experience of some of my publication when I have to write less words (just to comply with the journals' requirements) I have a PhD student with an excellent English writing skills editing it for me and OMG the first draft looks really so good for me and yet the main themes are still there.

All the best

Help opportunity in Psych

Hello folks, how is every one is on their application?

I wanted to ask you all if there is any opening anywhere in Psych to do observership/externship that you all might be aware of?
I emailed to so many people but they all have responded to me saying that they are all backed up until feb of 2015!

I would appreciate if some1 know some1 who might have an open spot/opportunity.

Thank you very much.

Default count me in

Ok, this is my second and last round of applying:
Step 1- 201(2), Step 2- 209, Step CS- passed, Step 3-199/YOG1999/Obseveship in psych 6 months/ 3 US LORs and 1 of them from Psych/Research and teaching experience in Neuroscience/MS in Clinical Psychology 2016.
I applied last year for 60 psych programs, this year will be 20 and only community.Getting tired of this gamble!
Good luck to all!

Red flags from last year:
1.YOG
2.No psych experience and No psych LOR
3, No step 3 taken
2 of those I fixed this year, plus my extra degree such MS in Clinical Psychology is in progress and should help, but I will never be able to fix YOG...

I will tell you based on my experience with the university I am at right now and what they consider as an aberration and whats not?

What you got and considered as a plus?
YOG, decent scores, genuine interest, Ireland for no reason they love it, USCE, and research.
Where did you present your oral and posters?
Any publications?
I think you got a GREAT chance if you play it will you might end up in a good program.

for one of my research experiences it was my thesis which i nor any of my professors pushed for publishing (big mistake on my part i think) but i did get an oral poster presentation out of it in a psychiatry symposium in budapest. the other research experience i was at the bottom of the totem pole but the work got publish in nature (wasn't included in the citation) ... regarding my oral presentations i have a few presentations in our hospital grand rounds which i heard is good enough. so short: no publications, 1 poster, and 3 grand round presentations over a year and half...

i have numerous (7-8) journal club and case presentations within dept in canada/usa/ireland but i think if i do that it might look like padding right?

can i get your skype information, it would mean as ur already in and can reflect, would be awesome to talk to u

I have done master degree in public health, have 2 poster presentations, preparing 2manuscripts to be submitted soon for publication. 2 letters of recommendations from psychiatrists, and another one from a principle investigator working on adolescents depression study.

I understand that being graduated in 97 is a big issue but, I hope that my genuine interest in psychiatry and my cv and personal statement will be good to get some interviews.

looking forward to read other applicants stories and collaborate with all of you.
thx!
I am also 1997 gradgaute IMG , you are doing great and I would like to learn from you how to improve my resume as I have no USCE or opservership, research or step 3, please mindful advise me as I feel i can go down the same road as you. Thanks alot.

Hi almhsen,
As you may know that being such far away from year of graduation put us in the low if ever ranked. But, if you have the energy and you can commit to improving your general cv and make it specific for psychiatry then there is a hope. Gaining research experience was not an easy task for me I spent so many hours writing emails, making phone calls and endless explaination of my interest to various institutions and principle investigators. Then once I was there ......I found my way to reach other people, sure I needed to work very hard to prove myself.

Thanks mindful a lot , I have sent Emails to a lot of research centers and observerships but no respond at all.

Do you think that one of the companies that offers paid observership will help?.

Someone promised me to find me a position in psychiatric research soon, kind of connection thing, I am praying to God to happen.

Also I started preparing for step 3.

I wish you the best mindful.

Thanks for responding, we will be in all this soon

Good luck to you and everubody.

may be it is automated rejection to those who couldn't get through the filter. did your credentials match the program's requirements?
