Default Is this a Red flag ????

Hey

Is failing one year in medical school a red flag for matching ?
Like if someone fails in one year and repeats that year will this be considered as a red flag ?
Do they care alot about your degrees in medical school ?

Im going to guess that YES. I mean, they do ask about your medical school transcripts. And also, your medical school is supposed to handle those and send them to OASIS themselves. So if you have failed a year, that might appear on your medical school transcripts and they might know about it.

On the other hand, you could try to talk to your medical school to see if they put that in. Maybe you repeat 1 year, and your new scores are written over your failed year, and it doesn't even appear on the transcript. Or you could work something out with them.

Also. When you apply to residency programs, most of them ask for a MSPE. Which is a medical school performance evaluation and its written by your Dean. So if he is a dick, he will put in that you failed 1 year.

It would depend on your MSPE. Most foreign schools just write the grade at passing in their MSPE and give really good MSPE or give something that tells very little about a student. Like medpack87, you should talk to your med school and find out more from past applicants from your school to be sure. AFAIK it won't matter as much as it would for an AMG. PDs say they don't know how a foreign school grades their students so their med school grades are of very little importance. I know a whole lot of people who have matched into really excellent programs who have failed a subject or more in med school but their MSPE had only their grades from when they passed and nothing about failing.

Its true, it doesnt weight as much as AMGs medical school performance, because they dont know how your medical school works. But if you fail a whole year, they might wonder what went wrong.

I think it matters. One of the assistant PD I spoke to told me the first thing the PD of one of the program does even before looking at the step scores is to look if the candidate has passed all the subjects in medical school at first attempt.

In MSPE, should we mention the scores or just pass/fail in each subjects?

I think it varies with medical school. My medical school mentions the scores and the number of attempts for clearing the subject in the transcript.

What if I tell my dean not to mention the scores, but only to put pass next to the subjects. Will the programs I apply to mind this?

Don't think so. If you can get that signed by the Dean, it should be okay.
