Question Any IMG'S planning on TAKING STEP 1 ???

Hey!! Are there any IMG's preparing for STEP 1 ?? If so anyone has any tips ? Because ASIDE FROM A GREAT STEP SCORE what else can I do to improve my chances to match?
Observerships and electives, but, any suggestions on how to enquire about this? I know there is an official list of hospitals that accept IMGs for electives but anything else? The sites won't specificy if I need Step 1 or not to apply (I haven't graduated) and they don't seem to have any requirements list, do I need certain GPA, what are they looking for????
HELP!!!

I also know that social service on my curriculum has a lot of weight too, any suggestions? Does it have to be something unrelated to medicine or can it be voluntering at a state hospital or red cross or is it more like about social charity things so to say... Like voluntering at homeless shelters and such. And what if I can't get a certificate that says I ACTUALLY did that?? :I How does it work? Does it have to be an institution?

Thaaaanks

The thing is I can't graduate before finishing my steps .. Or take time extra after my graduation to fill up my resume with social service ... So... Yeah. More like FIRST I need my steps second I need to be doing stuff to fill my resume and then I graduate.... In my country we have to do a whole year of unpaid social service 8-12 hours per day and there are no bank loans like in the states, banks don't do loans in cash and the places one gets sent to to do social service don't have Internet let alone receive credit card payments ... So... Anything you'd like to add now ?

most IMG's went through what your referring, most of my friends were done with all the exams before graduation, in my case no I finished all the exams post grad due to logistic reasons. I managed to do my exams while being a resident in a hospital its hard tough barely have the time to do so but I did it . with that said whats your question ?

Well, as you said, the other things that can you get you to match is US clinical experience. The best thing is that you are in time to get the best of them. Since you are still a med student, there are clinical rotations also called clerkship that many US universities and hospitals have for international medical students (which you wont be able to apply to if you already graduated).

If you already graduated or you don't get any of these clerkship. You can do observerships. Mainly by getting contacts at the US and begging so that they receive you and you can rotate with them. You can also try to apply directly to universities and/or hospitals for those observerships, but they cost a lot, and they are not so important as the clerkship you can get as a med student.

Best thing you can do is to finish with the steps before you graduate, but don't let that stop you from getting those clerkship. Talk to your university, to the people in charge of international affairs, talk with other people interested in USMLE in your own area. Do some Google research about clerkship for medical students in places like NY and Miami which are very friendly. Your main objective besides excellent step 1 and 2 scores are contacts and letters of recommendations.
