Arrow Instructions from ERAS for Repeat Applicants

ERAS 2012 Repeat Applicants

If you participated in the ERAS 2011 season and also participate in the ERAS 2012 season, ECFMG considers you to be a Repeat Applicant. You will be identified as a Repeat Applicant automatically at the time you make an ERAS 2012 Token request via OASIS.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You are a Repeat Applicant for the ERAS 2012 season only if you participated in ERAS 2011; applicants from prior ERAS seasons will not be identified as Repeat Applicants. Additionally, identification as a Repeat Applicant does not apply to residents in training who plan to apply for fellowship programs.
Repeat Applicants are not required to resubmit:
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs)
  • medical school transcripts
  • photographs
  • letters of recommendation (LoRs) that were transmitted to the ERAS PostOffice during ERAS 2011
IMPORTANT NOTE: Only those LoRs that were transmitted to the ERAS PostOffice during ERAS 2011 will be available for reuse for ERAS 2012. If you submitted an LoR but did not reserve a slot for the LoR in MyERAS during ERAS 2011, that LoR was not transmitted to the ERAS PostOffice and will not be available for reuse for ERAS 2012. To use that letter for ERAS 2012, mail it to ERAS Support Services, accompanied by a completed Document Submission Form (DSF).
Within one to two business days of the time you use your Token to register at the MyERAS website, ERAS Support Services will upload your stored MSPE, medical school transcript, and photograph to the ERAS 2012 PostOffice. LoRs will be uploaded to the ERAS PostOffice within one to two business days from the time that you finalize your LoR authors for the reused letter in MyERAS. See instructions below for reusing your LoRs.
You will be able to track receipt of these documents via OASIS.
If there have been changes to the content of your MSPE, medical school transcript, or LoR, and you would like to submit the modified document(s), mail the document(s) to ERAS Support Services at ECFMG, accompanied by a completed DSF. Indicate in the “Comments/Special Instructions” field of the DSF that this is a replacement for your previously submitted document(s). Once your modified documents have been received at ECFMG, they will be scanned and uploaded to the ERAS PostOffice, replacing last season’s document(s).
If you would like to submit a new photograph, you must submit a digital photograph using ECFMG’s OASIS. This will automatically replace the previously submitted photograph. You do not need to submit a DSF with a digital photograph.
For complete instructions on submitting supporting documents, see the Documents page and the detailed pages for each document type.
Guide to Reusing Letters of Recommendation

After you have completed your request for an ERAS 2012 Token through OASIS, you will be presented with a link to a list of the LoRs that were transmitted to the ERAS PostOffice during ERAS 2011. In order to reuse an LoR for ERAS 2012, you must select the LoR from this list and then save your selections. If you choose not to make your LoR selections at the time of your Token request, you can return to OASIS at a later date to make your selections.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Once you have saved your LoR selections in OASIS, you will not be able to make any changes to the list. If you choose not to use an LoR you have selected, simply do not assign it to a program. If you choose to use an LoR that you did not select, you will need to resubmit it to ERAS Support Services.
The reuse of LoRs is optional. It is especially helpful for applicants who waived their right to see an LoR and therefore could not request to have it returned to them via the ECFMG Return of Document Service (RODS). You do not need to resubmit an LoR unless the content of that letter has changed.
All LoRs selected for reuse will be listed on the Verify Receipt of ERAS Documents page of ECFMG’s OASIS after you have registered using your Token at MyERAS. ERAS Support Services will upload your LoRs to the ERAS PostOffice within one to two business days from the time that you finalize your LoR Authors for the reused letter in MyERAS, as outlined in the process below.
Reusing Letters of Recommendation

Before reusing your LoRs, carefully read the following instructions:
  1. Request your Residency Token.
  2. Select those LoRs that you wish to reuse from the ERAS 2011 season and save your selections.

  3. Use your Token to register at MyERAS.
  4. Once registered, allow one to two business days for the LoRs you selected from ERAS 2011 to be transferred to your ERAS 2012 applicant record.
  5. Go to the ERAS Support Services page in ECFMG’s OASIS and click on “Verify Receipt of Documents.” You will be able to view the letter writer information for those LoRs that you have selected to reuse.
  6. Once you have identified which LoRs you wish to reuse, access MyERAS and go to the “Documents” section. Under the “Letter of Recommendation” tab, finalize your LoR Authors, as instructed.
  7. The next business day, ERAS Support Services will receive your letter writer list electronically. The corresponding LoRs will be attached to your ERAS record and uploaded to the ERAS PostOffice.
  8. Monitor the status of your ERAS application through the Applicant Document Tracking System (ADTS), which you can access from MyERAS.

Suppose we write AAMC id no in each LOR this time n send it to ECFMG but in case if we don't participate or didn't match this year , my question is can we use those LORS with AAMC id in it,as next year too we have to buy the token again n I am assuming that we will get new AAMC id no.. so wouldn't be it problem to mention id no if we have a chance of using it next year with new id?

Next year you will get the same aamc ID but you have to buy the token again and register with eras again the same way you are doing now. You can use the same uploaded documents (they will be saved in your oasis, you don't need to send them again) but you need to assign these documents and apply in the match to at least 1 program to get your documents saved.

I would like a reply the above question aswell. What disadvantage do we have being a repeat applicant? does it affect the interview numbers in any way? or if we do not think we will end up applying to programs this year, should we just apply for the ERAS token next year?

you don't need any result to apply, just send your documents and assign them to programs and apply then they will be saved. yes you will get back the papers back thru the ERAS RODS service which will be available later in the match process. LORs which are not waived you will get them back but ot the waived letters.

None of the PDs will know that you are a repeat applicant. I t will not affect you at all, but it will give you experience how things work.

Hey.. I need your suggestion. I finished step 1, planning to take step 2 in jan 2012, do 3 months observership, write CS and apply for 2013 match. My friends are suggesting me to apply for ERAS token now so that I would be getting my AAMC number and that I can use it on the LORs if I get one during my observership. But I heard that I have to apply a new token for the next season but I need not reupload all the documents again as the AAMC number will remain the same. Is it really helpful to get the token now? Please suggest something

You don't need aamc number on your LORs, but you may add it manually later when you get it. If you bought token now and didn't apply to any program all your uploaded stuff will be deleted and you have to send them again next year. My advice don'y get token this year.
