Default Does being an specialist in other country boost matching chances?

Hello. I'm a PGY-3 orthopedic surgery resident in a good residency program in Spain. I'd love to work in the USA so I started to prepare my steps. I've got a 240 in step 1 (I found it really hard, studying for 4 months while working and having 24 hour duties!!!).

I'm going to visit some of the best hospitals in the United States in the next two years (Mayo clinic, HSS...).

I'd like to know if I could ever dream to match in any of the best residency programs in the US after finishing my training in my country, or if this is just almost impossible.

Thank you very much.

Ortho is so, so competitive. There's probably nobody on this forum who has matched to ortho from your position, so take everyone's advice with some caution (especially the guy above). I'd say you have an ok chance at some ok programs, but no IMG is guaranteed an great ortho program. I know one person who got it as an IMG and it was almost random luck that it happened from her elective.

I dont know about this forum but based on who I know from friends whom matched in Ophthalmology or plastic I am referring to their experiences with comparison

I don't know anyone who matched plastics. One friend matched ophtho. Nobody had experience in the field. The poster could match, but I'm just saying the stats (s)he has posted are not extraordinary for IMGs coming to the US (but certainly not bad at all).

No one can tell you your chances. It's all up to you. But I can tell you this, orthopedics is strictly an AMG club and in order for an IMG to get in he has to get VERY high scores, publications, connections...etc. Unfortunately, any experience outside the US doesn't weigh that much and make sure it doesn't turn you into an old grad when you apply for residency in the US because this can be a huge disadvantage and you can kiss your precious ortho residency goodbye in case it happens.
