Default Need some help regarding residency.

I plan to pursue my career as an interventional cardiologist hopefully. The question is when applying for residency I have to choose IM residency right, because I heard cardiology is a fellowship program, am I getting this right? I also need some help regarding categorical and preliminary positions, what possible options do I have when I want to pursue in cardiology?

Sorry for being redundant, but I really need some clarifications guys. Thanks!

Thanks for your time. So I should be aiming for IM residency then hopefully! I do have one doubt though, what is the purpose of categorical cardiology position then? Does that even exist, or did I just make that up?
