Default Observerships/Externships/Research aren't Clinical experience

Hello,

Some programs state that "Observerships/Externships/Research do not apply as Clinical Experience." What do they consider clinical experience?

Externships are hands on...

Can you please give an example as I don't understand how you could do any real hands on work in the US without a license.

In most situations, 'hands on' clinical experience means electives. You are eligible for electives only when you are in your final year of medicine. It is where you perform all the duties expected of a fourth year american medical student. You do the history/physical, procedures, consults, soap notes, etc. You are evaluated during the period of elective and are given an academic credit. Externship on the other hand though quite similar to an elective, isn't exactly the same thing. Externships are done by graduates and are quite difficult to get. I am not exactly sure what is expected of an individual in an externship, but externships usually are not given academic credit or are you evaluated during the period.

Oh okay. Thanks for your explanation. I've done externships where it was similar to electives but I guess if they don't consider it an USCE, I can't really argue with them.

I was a bit confused as this is what the programs is stating:
"Experience: More than two months of US Clinical Experience within the last year. Observerships/Externships/Research do not apply as Clinical Experience.
Medical School Graduation Date: Within the last 10 years"

They want recent USCE (electives?) but their graduation cut-off is 10 years, which wouldn't really make sense.
