Listening General Surgery Residency versus Cardiology Fellowship

I'm currently studying for step 1 and in the process of deciding what residency programmes to apply for. Having worked as a doctor for a few years I have enjoyed cardiology and GS (only breast surgery).

I wanted to know realistically, is it easier landing a good IM programme followed by fellowship in cardio or getting into GS?

I know IM is easier, but realistically if these are my two career options, is it easier to get cardio fellowship or GS residency? I don't really enjoy any of the other general medical specialties so if fellowship is very hard I wouldn't consider IM!

Would be grateful for any help.

Default Probably the same difficulty

Getting into fellowships is usually easier than getting into residencies specially if you don't have visa problem at the time of fellowship application.

However, cardiology ranks at the top of all the fellowships available for an IM graduate while general surgery does not rank on the top of available surgical residencies (for example you have ortho, ENT, plastic, neuro, and vascular surgery above it).

Therefore, bottom line, I might safely say that both options have the same degree of difficulty.

It also depends on your current status. If you are a simple graduate with no prior experience, an IMG, no surgical experience, ...etc then it might be better just to get into the system with an IM residency and then work yourself out into cardiology. While, on the other hand, if you do have some surgical experiences and LoRs then it might be wiser to hit straight into general surgery categorical residency.

hi step taker,,i have a question too..
i wana know, what are the chances of getting into General surgery residency if an IMG has good scores, like 250+ in both step1 and CK,passes CS in first attempt.but has no US clinical or research experience whatsoever..what are the odds??

There are other factors such as the years since graduation, visa status, connections to residency programs, home country surgical experience, surgical US LoRs, ....etc
Generally speaking, high scoring in USMLE should make getting into general surgery easier but it's still not an easy thing to get at all.
I can't tell you a percentage or a probability number exactly, every applicant is unique [just like your username ] and every residency program differs from others.
