Default LOR confusion

Hello friends,
I am an IMG and I did elective for one month last year. At that time 3 attending were ready to write me LOR. But when I contacted them this time they are not willing to write one. So my question is that should I apply this year without any US LOR or wait for next year and get some observerships. thanks in advance.

Have they explicitly denied? If not then keep sending them reminders. Most attendings are very busy and won't reply to your first emails. Keep sending reminders and hopefully someone will get back to you.

I think you can still apply with your non us lors especially if your step scores were stellar

It happens especially at large universities ie Columbia, etc. The idiotic guys pretend to be helping you but in reality turn their backs at the end. They will mention something like "I will upload the LOR directly before your submission" and then no response. Not every physician is decent, there are many bad apples.
You can even pick up how corrupt some of these guys are. Making jokes on vulnerable patients behind their back.

Sometimes, it's harder for a physician to directly reject your request for a LOR to your face. This provides a more guilt free way of doing this. Perhaps these docs did not want any confrontation.

Also, humor is a defence mechanism. Many of the best physicians I know (my mentors) make jokes at their patients' expense. Not to be mean spirited or anything, but that's just how the culture is.

Dude, not everything is a mechanism. These guys do everything with conscious mind for a financial motive. Especially with reduced fundings these days they are nowadays lying to IMGs (that includes American citizens) to make as much money as possible from them without providing any services. Go for observerships at Columbia. They clearly hate to have observers but don't mind taking the money unless you have DOCTOR mom/dad at their institute. Do you think it is difficult for them to write a letter to a guy who worked hard for a month with them? Same situation replace it with someone who is a son/daughter of his colleague or superior in the hospital. They will happily write an LOR even if the person does not attend. This is a reality. That is the reason even though some universities have a policy of no observersers, the sons and daughters of their staff manage to sneak in. They lie to protect each other.

Seriously they joke about the fantasies of a psychotic patient in a hallway. Imagine if this kind of sensitive info goes outside what is the public going to think of our profession.
