Clock Late for Match?

Hi!
I'm a Img, planning to apply for Peds this year.
Step 1 = 97
Step 2 cs = pass
step 2 CK = taking on july 28. So, the results are expected on August 17, after which i will be applying for ECFMG certification.

I have 2 doubts

1. If i dont get certified by sept 1st, can i still apply for programs which require ecfmg certification and later update? (probably sept 7) or should i apply directly on sept 7 after certification?

2. I got into an observership (Peds) at an university in september. So i'm gonna get my 1st Us lor by sept end and then i'm gonna upload it.
Does it have any adverse effects on the no of Interviews i get?

Thnx
Jsr

Hi cuppucake
1-You don't need the certificate to join the match neither you need to apply to get it, the certificate will be issued automatically and you will receive it by fedex once you pass your required steps. The certificate is only needed to start residency in June.

2-You can creat a slot for this LOR in your eras account and assign it to the peds programs, then by the end of Sept when eras receive the LOR it will be uploaded to this slot and the programs which you assigned it to them will be notified by eras and so your application will have another review ;-)
You have excellent score on step 1 so I don't think this delay will affect you anyway according to my experience.

Thanx a Ton Applicantguide,

Few of the Universities mention that the applicants must be ECFMG certified to apply for their program. My doubt was, when this kinda situation arises, can i still apply for residency there even if i'm not certified but have all the step score in hand?

Many people I was coaching last year applied to these programs (IMG friendly programs I mean with such requirement) beofre getting the certificate, and they were getting interviews, many of them matched. Usually the PDs know that your certificate is matter of time after you finish the required steps.

Ok, if I do apply for programs which require certification without being certified, will my application be downloaded so the PD can view it? or it gets filtered into trash?

Do u basically advise me to apply even to IMG friendly programs which require certification by sept 1?

Thnx!
JSR

It depends on the total number of programs you are applyng to and to your scores, you have excellent step 1 score, your App will not go to trash, I have many applicants in your situation getting interviews over the last few years, apply widley.

This is wrong.
PDs are not sure you'll get the certificate, even if you pass all the steps, because there might be issues with your credentials and they don't want to get into trouble.
Moreover, the filter is not in the hand of the PD, it's in the hand of the coordinator, she will filter out any applicants without ECFMG certificate (without even opening the file and seeing if the did pass the steps or not).

@cuppycake,

If the program requires ECFMG certificate then you must have it before you apply.
Applicantguide is wrong in his posts.

This issue has been discussed by USMLE Forums staff on several occasions, for more details look here

I will not argue with you because I know your limitations, but am not wrong, you definitely don't know my experience with IMGs. Please be careful before you judge issues you have no clue about.

My dear,
Professional people do not get upset when others disagree with them. So if you have the experience that you are bragging about, you should be accepting to others opinions.
Also, did you click on the link I mentioned! Did you see what other "experienced" people mentioned about the issue!

Good luck with your coaching!
