Default cardiothoracic surgery in US, what are the keys ??

hellow everyone,
I am new on this forum, i am a medical student.i want to do cardiothoracic surgery in USA and i have few questions about it:
* is it possible to do it or it is extremely competitive and only AMG can do it
* are we obliged to do general surgery before doing cardiothoracic fellowship, isn't there another pathway to do cardiotoracic directly ?( like in my country where it is considered an independent speciality)
* if not should i apply only for university programs for GS so to have a chance to do fellowship?
* what are the extras that i should have on my cv( besides great scores) and all the secrets that can make me great candidate for this speciality?
i hopee i wasn't long and thank you in advance.

you do residency in GS and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery after that. it is v competitive but i have seen IMGs having done it. you have to have excellent scores to get into GS and great quality electives with excellent LoRs and be a recent grad. and have some reference if possible. and once you obtain GS, you have to do very well, be very likeable and make untiring effort. the more work you do, more likely you'd get great LoRs for fellowship. it is possible for sure! thank you nixy for these information.
I still have lots of questions and didn't satisfy my entire curiosity about this subject i wish i could found a cardiothoracic surgeon in this forum, coz i don't undersand how a long speciality like CT that we do in our country in 6 years(more than other surgical specialies) americans are able to do it in just 2 years ?? it does not make sence
also another question when applying to GS should I show to PD's my interest in Cardiothoracic or in general? ( electives and research should be on GS or CT? )

its because cardiothoracic surgery is a fellowship, it takes 2 additional years of training after a regular 5-year long training in general surgery

I remember reading about six year integrated cardiothorasic surgery residency programs. They are probably extremely competitive, google it up.

@ bobbyto:
yes i know that but back in our country GS and cardiothoracic are independent and different specialities(and in fact they are independent, interventions are totally different) wich means that during those 6 years we only do cardiothoracic (no AP,no chole ...) what i want to know is would americans be able to do all 6 years in just to years?
@durisetister:
yes i already saw something like that on yale's website, but i think it's a new kind of programs, that are very few(20 in US a heard) and ase a result extremely competitive
